Two Disasters That Didn't Live Up To The Hype

Two recent events occurred and despite those that would have us believe that this would cause the world to veer off course and smash into the sun, or some such nonsense, things are still normal as can be.

My friend Zach Wisniewski pointed out today's event, the first day that same sex couples were allowed to register in the new domestic partnership registry.

Even though people were lining up since this morning to sign up, I can safely say that my marriage is as strong and as sacred as it ever was. I did not hear of a rash of divorces, and the only strained marriages that has been reported lately has been due to unfaithful Congressmen and Senators.

Although I do not see why there would be any outrage, the same sex couples are still barely being treated like human beings.

The other event happened last month, and went by unnoticed by the general population as a whole. The minimum wage went up to $7.25 per hour.

I have not noticed a rash of businesses closing their doors or the economy coming to another screeching halt. In fact, the economy as a whole, while still in no great shape, is starting to show some minor signs of improvement, much to the chagrin of talk radio and many Republican politicians gearing up for 2010.

It's a good thing that we are too smart to buy into the right's fear and smear anymore.

  1. Your random sampling of the streets aside, increasing the minimum wage does have bad effects on businesses AND workers, even if it doesn't means businesses don't shut their doors.

Often times businesses will stop hiring more employees because they can't afford to pay more. Other times they will cut staff due to the increased cost as well.

The other unseen effect is that more businesses change their model so they can become exempt from the minimum... and actually start to pay people less. The number of people who were paid below the minimum wage actually increases significantly when the floor is raised.

So the effect of the minimum wage increase is to raise the number of unemployed, and to decrease the wage among others, while it's increased for some.

Yeah - great idea you have there.

  2. So you're advocating to what is little more than slavery?

$7.25/hour is hardly a living wage, now is it?
