I can just see the Republicans standing in front of the DMV with the papers waving in their hands saying how this proves their is voter fraud and that ACORN* is taking over the world.Wisconsin residents could soon register to vote in a unique way.
A bill being presented to the state legislature would automatically register you to vote when you receive your drivers license or register your vehicle.
Many states offer that option, but Wisconsin would be the first to
Make it automatic, unless a voter opted out.But the Wausau City Clerk says it could cause issues and add expenses when it comes to the voter lists, because not everyone who has a license or registers a car intends to vote.
"Those lists are what I use a certain percentage is what I use to order ballets for, so if you swell my list to a larger population that never intend to vote its going to cost not only myself but every municipality in the state more in ordering supplies for elections
," said Kelly Michaels, Wausau City Clerk. The bill has about five weeks to be approved, because the legislature wraps up regular business on April 22nd.
*Yes, I know that ACORN is defunct, but there are some on the right already claiming this is a conspiracy to lull people.
This actually makes a lot of sense, and would certainly streamline the process for those who are coming from out of state, or simply changing their address, which you really should do when you move. Although, considering the DMV moves slower than molasses in January, I think I'll stick with stopping by city hall to get registered and find out where I need to go to vote.
ReplyDeleteThis won't work unless they allow felons the right to vote. A felon can get a driver's license, but there's nothing to indicate the felonious status. But hey, if you're OK with more taxes and more bureaucracy, so be it.
ReplyDeleteGreat... something else for the DMV to keep track of, when it took them three YEARS to update our address in their system. Sign me up twice!
ReplyDelete(sarcasm off)
I hope they got the gender right :^)
ReplyDeleteDude, don't even get me STARTED on the run-ins I've had with the DMV...
ReplyDeleteWhy do democrats want to register voters at the DMV, but reject issuing them voter id cards? That makes no sense.
ReplyDeleteDon't try logic arod...you will confuse them.
ReplyDeleteWhat does registering at DMV have to do with photo ID? BTW, jury duty is (or is it was?) tied in to having a license. It's just a way to try to get the largest data base in the most efficient manner.
ReplyDeleteIt seems kind of foolish to me, considering the current system, outside of absentee ballots, is working pretty well.
Capper, you didn't answer my question. Why is our state legislature trying to tie voter registration with license registration?
ReplyDeleteUm, yes, I did.
ReplyDeleteIt's just a way to try to get the largest data base in the most efficient manner.
It seems kind of foolish to me, considering the current system, outside of absentee ballots, is working pretty well.
Now, stop acting like such a fool.
Okay, let's try this again. Why do we need to get the "largest data base in the most efficient manner?" Or put another way, why can't people register to vote on their own?
ReplyDeleteConsidering that I am not a Democrat, much less in their decision making circles, I cannot say for sure.
ReplyDeleteMy guess would be because they tend to be inclusive, as opposed to the Republicans that look for reasons to exclude people.
LOL! Well, you're certainly not an independent.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, this is more than being inclusive. You know as well as I that undocumented people now have the ability to get a drivers license. If this bill were to pass, then illegals can register to vote.
Personally, I am sympathetic to illegals. They come here to work and feed their families, and I don't believe they should be targeted in any way, shape or . . .
However, they still have to go through the process of legalization, and therefore they do not have the right to vote.
Let me ask you this, are democrats so inclusive as to let the undocumented vote in elections?
A) How nice of you to try to categorize me.
ReplyDeleteB) To answer your question, you would have to ask a Democrat.
C) Even if I was a Dem, I would have to see the bill before I would be able to comment.
D) Did you even notice that I thought the bill was a bad idea?
Oh come on, Capper. That's like me trying to act like I'm not a conservative.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, if you don't like the bill, then perhaps you should write a piece condemning it?
I never denied being a liberal, which is not necessarily the same as being a Democrat.
ReplyDeleteAs for writing a piece about it, I don't feel that strongly about it one way or the other to put any effort into it.
If preventing convicted felons (actually I think it's only those who are under supervision), non-US citizens, non-living persons and non-existent persons makes me a vote suppressing Republican, count me in!
ReplyDeleteAs for the rest of the groupings claiming the meanies in Brooks Brothers suits scare them away from the polls...bulldookie.
I agree that the absentee ballot system is screwed up...it's the number one source of fraudulent votes.
That's okay, capper. I just did. :-) I gotcha covered.
