We Have It In Our Power To Begin Wisconsin Over Again

By Jeff Simpson

In every election as far back as I can remember, the party in power gets smoked in the mid-terms.  For Wisconsinites, the timing could not be better.   The 2018 election will be much more important than the beating the Democrats took last night.   The work for that needs to begin today,  but first we need some housekeeping and lessons from the election of 2016(from a Wisconsin point of view).

1.  The old rules of how to campaign, win elections etc... all got thrown out the window this year.  While normal candidates, by the book, spent thousands on polling(more on this later), the Donald spent more on hats than he did polling.   The Donald had no real ground game, fought with everyone and spent most of his energy attacking anyone who criticized him, yet was the first Republican to win WI since Ronnie.

2.  There NEEDS to be accountability.   We have zero power now to make change, but we have all of the power to demand change.   There needs to be resignations and they need to come yesterday.   I would recommend we start with Martha Laning, Kory Kozlowski and whoever the head of research for the party is because he/she apparently had no idea that many people were running for office on the Dem Ticket.   We need to continue on and get new leadership in the State Senate and Assembly.   Jen Shilling and Peter Barca need to step down from their "lack of " leadership positions.

3. I recommend that David Bowen take over the party for the next year and he hire Mandela Barnes as Executive Director.   Then Mandela can decide after a year if he wants to run for office again or take over the WISDEMS.  One way or another, Mandela Barnes is part of the future of our party.    I also recommend that Kathleen Vinehout be Senate Minority leader and that Katrina Shankland be Assembly Democratic Leader with Jonathon Brostoff as her assistant.    Fresh leadership is desperatly needed!

4.  Anyone who tells you that Bernie would not have done better against The Donald is just trying to cover up their own incompetence and lack of understanding of the election process and the Wisconsin electorates, so please take what they say with a huge grain of sand!

5.  We need to have all of the super delegates, understand their role in the massive losses that we sustained in Wisconsin.   Bernie was a huge favorite, won Wisconsin primary handily, and yet all but David Bowen used their super delegate vote for HRC.  Wisconsinites who supported Bernie were contacting them to advocate for their candidate, some of the SD's were reprinting their letters and openly mocking them on social media.

David Bowen, Mark Pocan, Gwen Moore, Ron Kind, Tammy Baldwin, Martha Laning, Jason Rae, Christine Bremer Muggli, Martha Love and Michael Childers.

 6.  The old saying of "Don't mourn, Organize" is becoming passe' and needs to be edited to say "Don't mourn, talk".   I understand that everyone needs a little time to let the loss sink in but do not withdraw.   I see lots of my liberal/progressive friends on social media unfriending their Trump supporting friends and family members.  Stop it!

I have no problem criticizing our elected officials who are bigoted, anti education, racist and just plain dumb.  Keep that up, but their supporters are a different story.  We need to dialogue with them, try and understand them, see where they are coming from.  how they got there. and what you have in common.  Help them see the same things about you.   A big problem is we have put ourselves in a little bubble and only hear and see what we want too.   That happens on both sides (see News Fox) and we need to find ways to step outside our bubble and into theirs and vice versa.

So Don't mourn, engage!

7.  Find a spot for Mandy Wright.  Like Mandela Barnes, Mandy Wright also needs to be the future of the party!

8.  Lets stop pretending that Charles Franklin and Nate Silver are heroes, guru's, experts or geniuses.  It is time to recognize that the anonymous opinion of a thousand people does not speak for 5 million others.   Polls are fine and they are good to know some information, but like a standardized test in public schools, tell us just a small frame of a feature film.

9.  Who is the base of the Democratic Party?  As a former industrial, heavily unionized, blue state, the economy is not working for many many people.  With Gatt, NAFTA, WTO, And now the TPP, states like Wisconsin have been crushed economically.

Why have we allowed someone like Scott Walker to divide and conquer?  Because there is no champion to unite us.   No person to acknowledge the fact that we have lost jobs, that poverty is going up and so are incomes of the upper class.  No one to acknowledge that people are working two jobs and losing their homes.   No one to acknowledge that attacking public workers for having health insurance while we allow our politicians to give millions of our tax dollars to their friends no questions asked is hurting our state.

That is what made Bernie so popular in WI(he won 71/72 counties) and elsewhere.   He spoke to the people that needed a champion.  He spoke directly to them and told them he gets it and understand their pain and the importance of fixing it.

The people of Wisconsin, and elsewhere, are desperate not only for a populist message but a sincere populist message.    If you can filter out the racism, sexism, bigotry, etc... (and many people could) the message that Trump was saying was a populist message,   He told the people that he understood that they are losing their jobs to Mexico and China etc...  He let them know that he understood that we need jobs in America and that if you elect him the jobs will come back.    Ignoring the fact that the messenger was incredibly hypocritical, and the part of the problem, but the message resonated.

10.   The Dem party, which includes the party apparatchik, made many mistakes throughout.

          A. This is the first election in memory where the candidate did not make an appearance in the final days before the election.   Great idea.

          B.  Hillary did send many surrogates here (Bernie Sanders, Cory Booker, Elizabeth Warren) and every time, they gave speeches to a solid crowd of Democrats and not once, did local/statewide candidates get a chance to share the stage and introduce themselves.   Now when we start looking at the next election, we get to hear how so many Democrats do not have "name recognition".

          C.  Statewide Dems, who had a chance to get on a bigger stage, never once did they start naming names and talking about winning.   For instance, Mark Pocan was on Mike Gousha show and when asked about Paul Ryan working with The Donald, never once even mention the fact that Ryan Solen was running against him and he had to win his election first.

11.  We need to identify who the base actually is.   It should be a big tent party where we bring in and appeal to everyone from the white working class to the minorities to the CEO's to the people in poverty.  If you follow politics, really follow politics, you know that many Trump/Walker supporters should be voting Democratic...so why aren't they?

12.   There is a whole professional political class, that moves from one inside job to another and they are destroying our state.   The consultant class is consulting our state into a bright bright shade of red. For instance:

 *  As Nation Consulting owns writes:  2. THERE IS NO SILVER BULLET. This is not the case of one thing going wrong. If you think nominating Bernie changes this 180 degrees, no. If you think more money changes this, no. If you think only racism or sexism or bigotry explains this, no. If you think only economics or culture explains this, no. If you think any one thing being different is the solution, no. A clusterfuck of this proportion only happens when many, many things go wrong. So take your simplistic answers and shove them.
It is not simple but if you think nominating Bernie would not have made a difference then you can take your simplistic understanding of the WI electorate and shove it! Of course a shill for Hillary would downplay the importance of the vast majority of Wisconsinites.

* Former Mary Burke team member, Joe Zepecki(who handled the press operations for Burke, on what might be the worse press operation campaign in history), who was given numerous chances on news talk shows to "speak for the Democrats", was also given the keys to a multi million dollar Super PAC (For Our Future Fund), which focused on community organizing, was based in Milwaukee. The lower turnout in Milwaukee was the difference in helping the Donald win WI and the Presidency.

Looking at some numbers (not sure what they mean, except turnout matters). (Assuming the results are all in) Clinton had similar margins of victory as Obama in Milwaukee County (66% to 29% vs 67% to 32%; 162,895 more votes in 2016 vs 169,660 in 2012). However, Obama collected 39,104 more total votes in Milwaukee County. Trump's statewide margin of victory was 26,788.

*  Many statewide candidates hired a company from Chicago called The Strategy Group.  Apparently this group of high priced political consultants from Chicago, most of whom were from the Coasts and Washington DC, were the perfect group to tell us how to win in Ladysmith, Winter and Oconto.    Of course right up until election day when they cash their checks, head home and their candidates get their hats handed to them.

13.   The party insiders need to get over themselves and take a long hard look in the mirror.  Wisconsin was a blue state until Mike Tate and his crew took over and now we are a bright red state.   Members of his team turned that kind of success into other jobs, like Jake Hadju, who ran Hillary's operations in WI( the first time since 1984 that a Republican won our state).

Many of the team are outright hostile to people who are not members of the party or have criticisms.  Which leads to divisions in the party and Republican landslides.   If they want to continue in their old habits, then they need to find a new career.  If they are willing to acknowledge that their way has not worked in years then lets all work together and change this state back to blue!

14. Do not be a party of the Republicans suck, be a party of telling stories and holding Republicans accountable.   For example, in the last week before the election, Paul Ryan had someone yell at his GOTV rally "Where is Lee Harvey Oswald when you need him?" and Paul Ryan completely ignored it.  So did the media and the Democratic party.   What would have happened if someone yelled that about Scott Walker at a Democratic GOTV rally?

15.   Finally, we need some people to start running for Governor now.   Lets get name recognition and message fine tuned soon.  We need to let the Republicans attack them now, and make the hard core criticisms old news by election season!

Extra Credit:   Make Alan Grayson head of the Democratic National Committee!

We can do this.  2018 can bring a new day but we need to work together and we need to start now!

Mandy Wright Under Attack

 Image result for mandy wright

By Jeff Simpson

I told you before that Mandy Wright was under attack by Scott Jensen.   Two years ago, Jensen spent about $150,000 smearing Ms. Wright and was able to beat her by 86 votes.   The nameless stooge that Jensen bought into office decided not to run again so now they are running former, very small market right wing radio host - Patty Snyder.

Scott Jensen got less than he bargained for and because he found such a weak candidate, he has to spend more money   This year Mr. Jensen has spent well over $200,000 of the Michigander's DeVos family money, to send their employee to Madison.

In a district that has been devastated by lay offs at places such as Wausau Papers, Federal Mogul Wausau Insurance, SNE Enterprises etc... and Scott Jensen is spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to smear Ms. Wright so they can tap even more into public education funds.

Formerly convicted felon, Scott Jensen, actually leads the organization American Federation For Children (AFC) even though he would not be qualified to work in any public school district in Wisconsin.  In other words, the guy who many people are trusting to decide what we do with our public education money, is not qualified to work with our children.

Not only is Mr. Jensen not professionally qualified, he is not intellectually qualified either.  The ad that he is running(trust me no one spends his money without his approval) is written in his best Trumpesque, 7th grade neener neener, pee wee herman like text that, would earn a 6th grader a D-, you need to do better from any teacher in America.

“My mom and dad taught me to always keep my promises. They say I have to if I want people to trust me. I heard them say this teacher, Mandy Wright, wants to get elected, but she doesn’t keep her promises. My mom said she promised to help schools, but she voted against giving them $300 million dollars. My dad said she promised to help veterans, like him, but she said no to extra money to help them too. They also say Mandy Wright promised to take care of old people, like my grandma and grandpa, but she said no to helping them with their medicine. And she got a fine for lying. She called in sick at her school, so the kids had no teacher, but she wasn’t even sick! So if Mandy Wright broke all these promises, I don’t think I can trust her. I bet that’s why she lost the last election. Why would anyone want to vote for Mandy Wright in this election?”
Seriously, overlooking that there is zero truth anywhere in the ad (except that Mandy Wright is a teacher), it looks like it was written by someone who lost a writing contest at Liberty University.

While the whole thing is absurd, I want to focus on one line:

She called in sick at her school, so the kids had no teacher, but she wasn’t even sick!

I was not aware that Pat Snyder, Scott Jensen, Scott Walker etc... had their medical degrees and are able to diagnose sickness, especially from afar ( I am curious if they ever complained about Scott Walker's 3 months of drunkenness on the taxpayer dollar last summer. but that is another post).

If anyone has ever attended Milwaukee brewers opening day, they would know that 40,000 + people are all together trying to recover from the illness they called in sick for.   Anyone that has a clue on how our schools work, know that when a teacher calls in sick, the school district calls in a sub so never in a child's school career do they "have no teacher".

It is a disgusting, childish, ridiculous ad, and anyone that would run such a commercial, does not deserve your vote for anything, but maybe a "most corrupt politician" reality TV show.

Please, our friends in the 85th Assembly district, please send Mandy Wright back to Madison!  The rest of the state is counting on you!

Here is Mandy Wrights website and like her Facebook page, check her out, give her a few bucks, knock some doors for her and/or call your friends in the district.

Every vote counts!

I'm With Her, Her and Her!

By Jeff Simpson

One lesson that this election season has taught us is that the Democratic Party is not with us.  From the DNC stacking the deck to give us the candidate with the most negatives ever to run for President(who gets less popular by the day), to the progressive disaster yesterday in Florida to right here in Wisconsin where after Bernie's overwhelming victory, Democratic Party chairwoman Martha Laning moved the goalposts to make sure Hillary had WI support, to how poorly the WISDEMS treated public school advocate Mandela Barnes in his campaign.

The other lesson we have yet to learn, but that we easily can, is that we do not need the Democratic Party of Wisconsin to be successful  As a matter of fact, the best bet for WI is to not rely on them and work to get local progressive candidates elected.    In the year where we will probably have the first woman elected, how ever poor of a candidate she is, we have it within our power to elect Wisconsin women who are real progressive champions.

The first amazing woman I will direct you to, is one of my all time favorite Wisconsin legislators - Mandy Wright,  Mandy is a former/current teacher and a true champion of public schools.   We have sung her praises here before, and you can help her by going to her facebook page and her website(send her a few bucks or go volunteer).

Next up is someone we have also profiled here, Christine Welcher.  Christine is on facebook here and her website is located here,  .  Christine is going to retire Tyler August in November, with our help!  Christine's interview with Wisconsin Eye is here.

Finally, one more progressive woman I want to introduce to you - Sarah Lloyd.  Ms. Lloyd has taken the challenge of running against one of Wisconsin;s craziest natives - Glenn Grothman   Glenn Grothman used to be counted on to give crazy quotes on an almost daily basis, but since he won a primary to take over for Tom Petrie, the Republican Party has not allowed him much freedom or daylight to be caught saying something dumb that disqualifies him from being at the adult table.

Sarah is a farmer, advocate and will be a great representative for the 6th Congressional District and not embarrass the great State of Wisconsin.....if we help her get to Washington DC.

Sarah can be found on facebook here and her wesbsite is here!

Here is an interview that Ms. Lloyd gave to WPR, give it a listen.

Let's show the Nation that Wisconsin is back on the map an sending intelligent, progressive, amazing women to represent us and be a model to the Nation again!

Share their sites, talk to your neighbors and friends and family members all over WI and tell them, how ever they feel about the top of the ballot, the bottom of the ballot is what will steer the ship in the coming years for our state and our nation.  Send them a few dollars if you can, and when you get the DNC fundraising emails, and letters, remember that while we are not enemies, we really are not on the same side at this point.

Let's win these races and then re evaluate how we work with the party going forward after the elections!

Big Bad Mandy Wright!

By Jeff Simpson

One of my favorite WI Legislators(and regular readers know I do not have many) is Representative Mandy Wright.   Mandy Wright is a former teacher who in 2012 took the legislature by storm.  She was a first term-er, who not only represented the 85th assembly well, but truly represented Wisconsin.

Mandy Wright is an educator and involved citizen focused on empowering her
Mandy Headshotcommunity.  As a wife, parent of three beautiful daughters, teacher, and volunteer, Mandy has deep roots in Central Wisconsin.Born and raised in Wausau, Mandy grew up exploring the woods and Wisconsin River near her childhood home north of Wausau.  She attended Riverview Elementary and earned Varsity letters as a cross-country ski captain, goalie and captain of the girls’ soccer team, and the football kicker.  After graduating from Wausau East, she studied English and Norwegian, receiving her B.A. from St. Olaf College.  She worked for the Boys and Girls Club, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and as an after-school coordinator at Jefferson Elementary organizing many community programs and events.  In 2000, Mandy organized a Food Camp for children focused on local, sustainable food production.  Her family is a member of a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture).  The Wrights also frequent local farmer’s markets and make a point to shop locally.  Mandy and her husband volunteer to teach religious education at their church.  With an MA in Education from Viterbo University, Mandy worked for four years as an English and English Language Learner teacher at Wausau West.  After her third child was born, she took a year to be a stay-at-home mom and taught evening classes for Upper Iowa University.  She taught sixth grade and was coaching soccer at Horace Mann Middle School prior to her election in 2012.  Since serving, she has worked as the State Policy Coordinator for the Wisconsin Institute for Public Policy and Service and as a High School English teacher in the Mosinee School District.

Mandy was one of the biggest, loudest and best voices advocating for public schools and our children which did not go unnoticed.   American Federation for (profiting off of) Children(AFC) had no time for anyone who stood in their way of squeezing profits from our childrens classrooms.

AFC, with the Devos family billions backing them, and unethical, formerly convicted felon Scott Jensen running the ground game in WI, attacked Ms. Wright Mercilessly.  They shelled out over $110,000 of trackable money to smear her during the election season, and less than $40,000 promoting her opponent.

In case you missed that, reread that sentence again, slowly!

They shelled out over $110,000 of trackable money to smear her during the election season, and less than $40,000 promoting her opponent.

AFC and Scotty Jensen did not care who was running, which shows how little they care for the kids, they could have run a box of rocks(and apparently they did as Mr. Heaton announced his retirement after a year and a half of his two year term).

Their main objective was to privatize schools and Mandy Wright stood in their way.

Unfortunately, they won that round, by a whopping 86 votes.  That works out to $1744 per vote they needed.  Next time your school has an operating referendum to keep the lights on, remember that the billionaires pay Scott Jensen over $200,000/yr to take money away from your schools.

The 86 votes though was too close for the owners liking, so they demoted Mr. Jensen and brought in Americans for (their own) Prosperity (AFP-WI).  AFP recently opened an office in the 85th Assembly district so they could have (well paid)boots on the ground daily to try and keep Ms. Wright out of Madison!

Americans for Prosperity-Wisconsin field director and Wausau area resident Jim Joyce had the following comment:
“Having an Americans for Prosperity office in Wausau is a real game changer. I have spent years fighting for freedom in central Wisconsin and now activists will have a permanent space to work. I cannot wait to see what we will accomplish here.”

If the name James Joyce sounds familiar, it is because it IS remarkably familiar to Rep. Bob Kulp's Treasurer Jim Joyce.    Not that I am accusing AFP-Wi with coordinating with campaigns or anything---- O hell, of course I am accusing AFP-WI of coordinating with these campaigns.

To be fair though, in Wisconsin with such a strong reliance on WMC and ALEC to write their bills and tell them what to do, the Wisconsin Republicans have lost all critical thinking skills(if you dont use it you lose it), so someone needs to think through their campaign for them.

As Scott Jensen himself said,
In an interview, Jensen laughs off Heck’s “compliment” but notes that AFC won six of the eight legislative races it targeted. “Our goal was to elect as many school choice supporters as possible, so we focused on races we thought would be close, where our efforts would make a difference,”  he says.
Do we really want a guy, who is not even qualified to substitute teach in our schools deciding legislative races that effect the quality of education your children receive?

As for Mandy Wright, luckily for Wisconsinites and the people of the 8th Assembly District, she has decided to throw her hat into the ring again.

We know that she has so scared the oligarchy, that two dark money orgs, backed by multi billionaires are uniting to attempt to stop her from regaining her seat back!

If that many out of state billionaires are scared of her, isn't that all the credentials you need to elect her?   Isn't that EXACTLY who you want sticking up for you in the Capitol?

Here is Mandy's website and Facebook page.   Check them both out, send her a few dollars and by all means give her some of your time!

Please Send Mandy Wright back to Madison, if anyone will fight for us all, she will!!

The Jensen Deception

BY Jeff Simpson

In Monona Grove, like many other public school districts in Wisconsin, we have a code of conduct that students have to sign and we expect them to live up to.   In this code of conduct this line is prominent:
Honesty (Students will be trustworthy and truthful, no matter what the consequence.)

The Elmbrook School District hasa special policy on Academic Honesty:
Policy 5131.2 - Academic Honesty
The District regards academic honesty as vital to the academic, social and emotional development of all students. Honest and ethical behavior is an essential component in the learning process. Academic honesty requires that all academic work is the legitimate, truthful effort and product of the student. In contrast, academic dishonesty is an attempt by students to claim and show possession of effort, knowledge and/or skills that are not their own. Academic dishonesty in any form shall not be permitted.
Which brings us to the issue of the day, public education, and the recent November elections.
We will see an expansion of "school choice" and the head of the "school choice" movement in Wisconsin is formerly convicted felon, Scott Jensen.  Jensen was basically given a "get out of jail free' card from his good friend and fellow Republican, Attorney General elect Brad Schimel.
After Jensen left in disgrace, he went right to be head lobbyist for American Federation for Children(AFC). AFC is funded by the Walton and DeVos family and their main goal is to privatize our public education.
AFC's visions is defined as(emphasis mine):

The American Federation for Children envisions an education system where parents are empowered to choose the best educational environment for their child, where innovation and entrepreneurism revolutionizes our education system, ensuring all children, especially low-income children, are provided with the opportunity to receive the finest education possible, whether it be in a traditional public school, public charter school, virtual learning, private school, home school or blended learning.
Doesn't there seem to be a disconnect that the organization that just wants parents to be "empowered to choose the best educational environment for their child" hired as its point person someone who has a proven history of not being able to be trusted to help serve the public?

To make matters worse, they give the ethically challenged Jensen lots of money to buy elections.  As Bill Lueders recently pointed out:

School choice proponents, many from out of state, funneled $64,000 directly into candidates’ coffers in 2014, through AFC and another group. (The AFC-affiliated funder, Wisconsin Federation for Children Political Fund, filed its last report Nov. 26, a month late, risking a penalty of up to $500. Its Washington, D.C.-based administrator did not respond to an emailed question about the late filing.)In addition, AFC made independent expenditures of $866,000 to boost or oppose candidates. This adds to the nearly $10 million in state electoral spending by school choice proponents between 2003 and 2012, as tallied by the nonpartisan Wisconsin Democracy Campaign.
AFC’s spending in the Nov. 4 elections included $148,000 to help narrowly defeat Democrat Rep. Mandy Wright, a former teacher and school choice critic. It spent $123,000 to help Republican Todd Novak score a razor-thin win over Democrat Dick Cates. And it poured $240,000 into GOP choice proponent Howard Marklein’s successful bid for an open Senate seat.**
** To put things in perspective, while they are spending tens of millions of dollars on elections, our annual budget(approximately 3200 kids, 250 staff, six buildings is $32 Million).   Also average teacher pay in WI is approaximately $47,000/yr, while Scott Jensen makes a over $200,000/yr.
When you give Scott Jensen that kind of money to play with, he uses it just as you would expect!

Yet, in its electioneering, AFC commonly doesn’t even mention school choice. It attacked Wright for allegedly using sick leave to attend a protest, which she insists is not true. It went after Cates for his vote on the local school board concerning the Pledge of Allegiance. And it ripped Democratic Rep. Gordon Hintz for threatening a female colleague and being cited in a massage parlor sting operation, both in 2011.

Now let's sum it all up, we have a disgraced former elected rep, who is spending hundreds of thousands of dollars in small time races, to attack certain candidates disgracefully and dishonestly, late in the game, about every issue BUT school choice, and then AFC wins by razor thin margins.   Then Mr. Jensen declares:

Jensen is proud of these victories, which he says give it “a school choice majority in both houses.” He attributes this success to public support for school choice.

How Jensen sleeps at night is something he will have to answer, but why we continually reward this behavior in our political system is something that we have to take a long look at.

Mr. Jensens behaviors, if he were a student in our district, would result in probably suspension and possible explusion(depending on the behavior plan we would work out between the principal, his teachers and parents).

Is the person who would not be able to be hired into our schools, the person we want entrusted with millions of public education dollars?

Do you feel safe knowing that YOUR children's future is in Scott Jensen's hands?

Rickert's Revelation

By Jeff Simpson

Wisconsin State Journal columnist Chris Rickert recently asked people who would be the Senators who could bridge our bur bipartisan divide and bring sanity back to WI.

I asked a few Legislature-watchers if they could point to anyone who might be willing to take up the mantle of considered consensus-building.
Democratic state Rep. Mandy Wright got more than one vote, as did Republican Sens. Rob Cowles and Luther Olsen. Among other names mentioned were Democratic Sens. Jen Shilling and Julie Lassa and Republican Sen. Mike Ellis.

Does anything show us the difference between the two parties than these two paragraphs?

 Democrat Mandy Wright:

Republican Mike Ellis:

That is the voice of reason in the republican party?  Thanks to Chris Rickert for showing us exactly how different the two parties are!

No Soup For You!

By Jeff Simpson

We brought you the ridiculous story of Dean Kaufert and Robin Vos wanting to tell people on food stamps what they could and could not buy at the grocery store.

It was such a Big Government, intruding in your life laughable ridiculous bill that we made fun of it here a few days ago.   As we know on Cog_Dis, there is more and boy is there!

It turns out this bill of Kauferts, who pretends to represent Wisconsinites, actually classified brown eggs, sharp cheddar and organic milk as "junk food".

Wisconsin's AB 110 would mandate that two-thirds of a person's FoodShare benefits could be spent only on foods on the WIC-approved list. Exemptions have been added so recipients can also purchase fish, beef, pork, chicken, and potatoes. Strangely, exemptions were not added so that the "healthy" two-thirds could also be spent on a full range of healthy Wisconsin farm products and fresh food.

The result is that the bulk of your FoodShare dollars can be spent on milk, but not organic milk; on eggs, but only on white eggs by the dozen, not on brown, free-range, or organic eggs; on 100 percent whole wheat bread, but not on gluten-free bread for those with Celiac disease; on slices of American cheese, but not sharp cheddar. FoodShare dollars can be spent on dry beans, but not if they come from a money-saving bulk bin at your local food coop. You can get juice boxes for your children, but only Juicy Juice brand juice boxes.
But WAIT there's more, its NOT just those foods there are so many more, as an anonymous source told me:

THe WIC list is terribly restrictive. I know a lot of people have been talking about the fact you can’t buy brown eggs, but the list does not include many basic foods.

The WIC list had no oils, margarine or butter. It has no spices, herbs, sauces, mustard, catsup or salad dressing. It has no flour, baking soda, sugar or honey.  It has no pasta, noodles, canned soups, canned beans, or canned meat like chili etc...  crackers, bagels. It only allows 100% wheat bread. It does not take into effect anyone with a gluten free diet.

So we have decided that the poor people in our community do not deserve to eat soup, frozen foods, crackers or  frozen dinners.   Who eats frozen dinners in 2013 you say, well my source answered that:

The last 4 are especially important to the elderly, disabled and ill people who get FoodShare. These individuals may not be able to cook a meal "from scratch" or even have access to a full kitchen.

These people depend on "ready to heat" meals, but they may not be able to purchase as many "ready to heat” meals as they need because AB 110 restricts ALL of Non-WIC foods to a mere 33% of their monthly FoodShare amount.
More info on WIC here!

Well Sorry Grandma, its Darwin's theory in WI.  Only the big dogs eat here!

Headache yet?  Sorry....as you guessed, there is more:

What have the studies had to say about this?

On the healthy foods bill, no studies have looked at the spending on different kinds of groceries within Wisconsin's FoodShare program, according to the state Department of Health Services. That means it's unclear whether the bill would actually increase the amount of money spent on healthy food in FoodShare.

Kaufert said that the bill should be passed because a substantial amount of FoodShare benefits is clearly being spent on junk food. But Rep. Evan Goyke (D-Milwaukee) said that's due in part to the fact that needy families in areas such as Milwaukee's inner city don't have ready access to stores stocking fresh fruits and vegetables.

Well there are no studies but everyone Kaufert knows poorer than him, is fat and no where near the physical fitness specimen that he is so they must be eating junk food!

Sorry my friends, but we are NOT even done yet!  What is the cost of implement this program?  Surely the deficit hawk, fiscal conservatives would have done a cost benefit analysis before ever bringing this bill to a vote right?  right?   ummmmm....

The costs of implementing the program have also been a concern for grocery store owners, who would need to make significant computer system changes to do that. Kaufert's bill has drawn outright opposition from other groups, including Kraft Food Group - the food giant whose holdings include Oscar Mayer Co. in Madison - PepsiCo Inc. and state associations representing food processors, convenience stores and retailers.
So when we desperately need jobs we are forcing an unfunded expensive mandate on some of our biggest employers.....brilliant strategy!

And yes there is more! How does this compare or conflict with federal mandates?

The U.S. Department of Agriculture, which oversees the FoodShare program, isn't commenting on the Wisconsin bill. In the past, it has rejected proposals in other states restricting the sales of soda or candy using public benefits, including Minnesota in 2004, New York in 2010, and Mississippi in 2012.

It will probably be rejected.  So we are spending all of this time and wasting money implementing a new restrictive big government intrusion law that  will in the end be rejected. At least we let the poor know that they have been living the good life by eating honey, Ketchup and Mustard far too long.

You lazy bastards have had dressing on your salads for long enough!  We are gunning for you!!

The worst part is when the 858,000 Wisconsinites who received some form of FoodShare benefits needed someone to stand up for them.  The democratic party went AWOL.

When 858,000 Wisconsinites needed someone to explain that the problem is the healthy food costs too much and many people do not have access to real grocery stores anyway, these 13 democrats said too bad for you!

When 858,000 Wisconsinites, were saying, in a very LOUD chorus, we NEED JOBS, these 13 democrats stood shoulder to shoulder with Robin Vos and said - we have other priorities!

When 858,000 Wisconsinites are working their butt's off to get by and raise their families, these 13 democrats said - "shame on you - get a job!"

When 858,000 Wisconsinites had no where else to turn, these 13 democrats looked them in the eyes and said "you are not deserving of butter,  soup, ketchup or Spices."!

Do not fear though, in a year those same democrats will be asking you to give them donations, volunteer for them doing doors, and answering phones.   858,000 people in a state of 5.7 million is a significant amount of votes(to put this in context, Pat "I see nothing" Roggensack's total vote was 482,696) and the dems will be asking you for their help.

They will need it!

Remember this day, I will!

If one of these democrats is YOUR rep, call them.  If not call Peter Barca and express your outrage that he would support such big government, intrusive legislation in WI!

Redistricting Reform

By Jeff Simpson

To absolutely no fanfare, a bunch of freshman legislators got together and authored a redistricting reform bill.

MADISON) State Representative Robb Kahl (D-Monona) is joining with the 13 other freshman
Democratic Assembly members in authoring a redistricting reform bill. The bill is based on the
highly successful redistricting process used in Iowa.

“I am joining with my colleagues, all of whom have not served previously in the legislature, to
move reform forward,” Kahl stated. “Both parties have erred in not acting to reform the
redistricting process when the opportunity presented itself. As new members, we are committed
from day one to seeing reform put into place.”

The bill, now designated as LRB-0665/1, will require the non-partisan Legislative Reference
Bureau to redraw district boundaries following the census. Unlike the current map that is in
place where one district makes a u-turn around another and communities of interest are split,
districts will be drawn to be compact, equal in population and with boundary lines that do not
look like jigsaw puzzle pieces.

Anyone who has paid attention these last couple of years, knows that there is not a better issue to showcase the republican parties lack of ethics, morals, honesty than the anti-democratic way they redistricted our state last time.

The republican party has decided its better to chose their voters, instead of the voters choosing their representatives.    In the last election(under the new districts), voters turned out overwhelmingly in support of Democratic Candidates, yet the democrats LOST seats!

This is not only anti-democratic, it has also proven to be incredibly costly for the taxpayers of WI!

However, I see two problems with this legislation.  The first being because it had bipartisan support and massive support of people, and press, from all over Wisconsin, do not expect it to be on Robin Vos's agenda anytime soon(which is what happens when the legislators choose their voters).

Secondly, how long if it does pass, do the republicans wait to pass a bill that takes all power away from the legislative fiscal bureau and makes the whole bureau appointees of the Governor?

Even when this bill dies in committee, it is nice to see some legislators actually going to Madison to LEGISLATE, instead of sitting in their gerrymandered district forever because they are incapable of ever getting a job in the private sector(see - Nass, Steve)
