Two Down, One To Go

Those that have followed me a long time know that there are certain things that really tick me off (besides Scott Walker).  Things like child abuse or animal abuse raises my anger like few other issues do.

One story that I've been following for three years, involved one of the harshest acts of animal abuse I've ever heard of and was made only worse because it happened in one of my favorite areas of the state, Central Wisconsin, where my castle is located.

The story involved three assholes that thought it'd be great fun to take snowmobiles and run down some deer, tormenting them and mangling the bodies.

The ring leader of these pukes, Rory Kuenzi, who was already serving a term for a drunk driving killing of a young man, was sentenced last year to 11 years in jail.

Now the second of the three has been sentenced:

A Waupaca man will serve a six-month jail sentence and probation time for his role in the 2009 snowmobile slaughter of several deer. 

Nicholas D. Hermes, 26, was sentenced Tuesday in Waupaca County Court for his role in the deer deaths along a trail in the Town of Lind. Hermes will spend 2½ years on probation and pay about $6,200 in fines and costs. 

In December, Hermes pleaded no contest to three felony counts of animal mistreatment and three misdemeanor charges of hunting deer out of season. Two felony mistreatment counts and two more counts of illegal hunting were dismissed as part of the plea deal.

The third fool, Robby Kuenzi is scheduled for trial April 3.  I expect him to get put away too.

Maybe they can share cell blocks with the Walkergate gang.

Grim Satisfaction

Nearly three years ago, Rory Kuenzi, his brother and a buddy of theirs thought it be grand sport to steal a snowmobile and ride down a small herd of deer.  The abuse and torture these assholes put those animals through is indescribable in its depravity.

Word just came out that after a lot of legal wrangling in an effort by Kuenzi to weasel his way out of the charges, he entered a plea of no contest to three counts of animal cruelty and two counts of possessing a dear carcass out of season.  Subsequently, he was given 11 years in jail, which is a lot more than I expected.

But even then, it's still a little anti-climatic since he will be serving this sentence concurrently with a sentence he received for killing a young man while driving drunk.

Deer Killer Convicted

I told the gentle reader that earlier this week, Rory Kuenzi, the bastard that thought it to be great fun to chase down, torture, kill and mutilate a small group of deers, was facing trial for the murder of a young man in Waupaca County.

Today, the jury got the case and was able to reach the verdict in less than two hours:

It took a jury less than two hours to convict Rory Kuenzi in the 2004 death of Kevin McCoy.

Six years after the death of Kevin McCoy, the past has finally caught up with Rory Kuenzi. Kuenzi was found guilty of fatal hit and run and homicide while operating a vehicle under the influence.

"I hope he spends the rest of his life in prison. He knew what he did and he lied about it from the beginning," said James McCoy, Kevin McCoy's father.

I'd still like to see them got through and have to face charges for the deer they tormented and killed, but this is a start.

Kuenzi Trial Starts Monday

Rory A. Kuenzi is the butthead who, along with his brother and a buddy of theirs, thought it would be great sport to chase down, torture and kill some deer in a snow-covered field in Waupaca County a couple of years ago.

It turns out that Kuenzi also allegedly involved in a hit and run homicide before that. But due to inept investigations by the Waupaca County Sheriff's Department, it looked like he might get away with it. The state stepped in, did their own investigation and found enough evidence that they are taking it to trial.

After some attempts at postponing the hearing, it is scheduled to start this Monday.

The defense has laid out their strategy to get their client off the hook on this one, but methinks it might be pretty hard to argue away how Kuenzi's DNA got on the victim's leg, especially when a witness helped him move the body off the road said that Kuenzi had taken the victim by feet and legs during the move.

The Old Deer Hunting Defense

Rory Kuenzi, the idiot that went out with his brother and a friend and decided to run down, torture and kill a group of deer a couple of years ago, is also facing charges of homicide while driving while intoxicated.

In the most recent developments, the DA's office and the defense attorney were trying to work out a plea deal. Suddenly Kuenzi chose not to take the deal and they court reverted to having a hearing in November. The defense requested a delay in the court proceedings in order to have more time to prepare their case. Their rationale was a little different (emphasis mine):

"We thought that a deal would be reached," Nielsen said, adding that he did not believe the defense could put together an adequate case in time for the trial.

Nielsen said he was also concerned the trial would run into the gun deer hunting season that opens Saturday, Nov. 20. He did not want the jury to feel rushed to pass judgment or potential jury members to avoid sitting on the case because it could interfere with their plans for the first weekend of hunting.

Needless to say, the judge denied the extension request, saying that the case was so old:

"This case doesn’t just have whiskers, it’s grown a beard down to the floor," Kirk said. "The result that can be obtained becomes more questionable with the passage of time."
