Report: 50% Community College Students Risk Hunger, Homelessness

Republicans love to tell poor people that they just need to go to school, get a degree and then they can get a better job and not be so damn poor.

However, that's easier said than done, especially with their agenda of plantation economics.

To confirm what we already new, the University of Wisconsin released a report showing the results of a survey which showed that half the students in community colleges are in risk of homelessness and hunger:
More than half of community college students surveyed at 10 schools in seven states are at risk of hunger or homelessness, according to a new study released Friday by the Wisconsin HOPE Lab at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

“Hungry to Learn: Addressing Food & Housing Insecurity Among Undergraduates,” helps respond to lingering questions about how widespread is the challenge to college students of meeting basic needs, Sara Goldrick-Rab, founding director of the HOPE Lab and co-author of the study, said Friday.

“Such high rates of food and housing insecurity among hard-working college students indicate that the nation faces a serious crisis,” Goldrick-Rab wrote in an Op-Ed piece published Friday in the New York Times. “Much of the conversation in Washington concerning college costs — whether it’s about simplifying the financial aid application or refinancing student loans — seems almost trivial in comparison with the problems these students face.”
The article goes on to point out that the number of respondents was rather low which might mean that the number of students in peril could be much higher.

It also points out that instead of viewing expanding services like SNAP as an entitlement or waste of money, it should be viewed as an investment and a student retention program.

Don't expect the Republicans to go along with that any time soon, though. That would only go to show a brighter light on their hypocrisy and greed.

One Of These Things Is Not Like The Other

By Jeff Simpson

We brought you the story this morning, that over the weekend, the Family Research council, led by Tony Perkins had a "ValuesVoters" summit to showcase the Republicans running for President.  The Canadian Cowboy, Ted Cruz, won the straw poll on the platform of arresting President Obama and assassinating world leaders he does not like.

To Compare/Contrast, our President spent the weekend speaking at the U.N. Summit where he spoke of his desire to end Poverty and Hunger.

President Barack Obama on Sunday committed the U.S. to a new blueprint to eliminate poverty and hunger around the world, telling a global summit that a sweeping new development agenda is "not charity but instead is one of the smartest investments we can make in our own future."
It was the first of two addresses Obama is making at the United Nations. His second on Monday morning, to the annual U.N. General Assembly of world leaders, will be a broader examination of world issues, especially the ever-more complicated conflict in Syria.
Obama offered a powerful defense of a 15-year development agenda and will require trillions of dollars of effort from countries, companies and civil society.
He told delegates that 800 million men, women and children scrape by on less than $1.25 a day and that billions of people are at risk of dying from preventable diseases. He called it a "moral outrage" that many children are just one mosquito bite away from death.
Obama said the goals are ambitious but can be achieved if governments work together.

Still think the two parties are the same?

Do NOT Cross Paul Ryan

By Jeff Simpson

If you complain when Paul Ryan calls you lazy, and then do not vote for him, he will make you pay and pay dearly!

The proposal, included in the House agriculture budget approved by a subcommittee this week, scales back an anti-hunger school lunch demonstration program set up in 2010 to feed "children in urban and rural areas" during the summer months when they're on break.

The twist comes in the wake of a popularized conservative meme about the moral hazards of free lunches for school kids. In July 2012, Fox News aired a segment on the "controversy" surrounding summer school lunch program, which it called "a valuable resource for families who are struggling and, critics say, a nice freebie for those who are not."

Maybe the poor and urban Americans will stop trying to have a say in our Country!
