Because Our Health Care Is So Good

As I told you earlier this month, I am headed off to yon northern castle for the weekend.

We don't have to go, per se, but then again we do:
The weekend after next, my wife and I will be going up north. However, it won't be to relax, do yard work, or anything else. We are going for the sole purpose of attending a fund raiser for a friend of ours, (a different) Sharon.

Sharon and her husband, Pete, own a small diner in Rosholt. They also have a contract with Portage County to provide the meals for their meals on wheels program. Pete is covered by the VA for his health care needs. However, they could not afford decent insurance for her. Earlier this year, Sharon was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer.

She has undergone severe and multiple rounds of chemotherapy and radiation simultaneously, leaving her in a terribly weakened state and unable to work.

If Sharon could have had affordable health care to her, she would not have to rely on the kindness of her friends and family to spare what they can to help alleviate her costs.
You see, we're just not the type of folks that will turn our backs on our family, friends and neighbors, just because it might mean we have a couple less dollars for ourselves. Actually, we will be paying more to help this one person, than if the system was reformed and we were helping all the people at once. Think about that for a while.

So, by this logic, if you're against a public option as written currently, or want Congress to at least take more time and get it right, and maybe, just maybe, take some of the other sides suggestions seriously, you're an uncaring, greedy bastard, right? Come on, Caps. There are better ways of doing this than by ramming it down people's throats using "We won" as an excuse to not listen to the other side on something like tort reform or things like that. Instead, your party calls them racist, astroturf, whatever.

I'm dealing with things right now as well. My work comp claim was denied, and the work comp companies doc lied, as well as omitted things in his report. Now, I have to jump through hoops with my disability provider. I haven't worked since July 17 and haven't had a paycheck since July 23rd. I've sought the advice of a Lawyer reguarding an appeal of the WC deal, and he advised me to wait for the time being and see if, after I heal, there's any permanent disability. Neat, huh? Yet, through all this, I don't want government involved, because they haven't shown me that they can run dick.

  4. Bill,

That's the same kind of crap that my mother went through, and her cancer wasn't work related. Something's got to be done, and should have been done a long time ago. People's apathy and resistance to change is not a reason not to do the right thing.

    Anon-

We only got to go for about an hour, due to me coming down with my own illness (an infection)but the place was packed and people were having to park in the fields around the bar where the event was staged.

Sharon has an up and down prognosis. She is currently clean of cancer, but has been told it will come back and that it will kill her. They just don't know when. She has also come down with pleurisy which is causing her a lot of weakness and pain. Thanks for asking though.

  5. Caps, I don't disagree that something needs to be done. I just want as little government involvement as possible. They'll screw it up because they only care about power, not "We the People.." I hope Sharon gets better, I really do. I just don't think a Government system will make that happen.

Anon, thanks. I'll get by. I always manage to. I've got a number of good friends, and, of course, my faith.
