Scott Walker Vs Independence Day

It's no secret that Scott Walker and holidays don't mix well.

On President's Day, he gets stuck in the sediment of Abraham Lincoln.

Walker managed to make Christmas a train wreck.

About the only thing he hasn't done - yet - is celebrate Channukah with some hot ham and rolls.

Independence Day fares no better with Walker's ineptitude.

An example of this is the email blast that came from his gubernatorial/presidential campaign:

Freedom.
Endowed by our Creator. Defined by the Declaration of Independence some 237 years ago. And protected each and every day by the men and women who proudly wear the uniform of these United States of America.
Please take time on the 4th of July to thank the service members and veterans in your community. Thank them for the freedom we enjoy today

And there was the infamous line from Walker a few months ago, which he is trying really hard to make into a soundbite:

It's why we celebrate the 4th of July and not April 15th. In our country, we celebrate true independence because more freedom and more prosperity are what drive the American Dream.

As one of our commenters on Jeff's post this morning pointed out, the Declaration of Independence isn't about freedom from government, but the freedom to form our own government.  And the way that Walker has "reformed" government is pretty much against everything the founding fathers had intended.

I'm not the only one to notice this either.  Chris Walker (no relation) of Political Heat has also noted that Walker is having a problem treating the holiday with the proper respect.

Popcorn Turkey

This Thanksgiving Day will be like no other in the history of Wisconsin.  With the need to collect more than 540,000 signatures in 60 days, people won't really have the time to putz around in the kitchen for an entire day making their Thanksgiving dinner.

In light of that, as a public service announcement, I repeat this recipe for a quick and easy dinner.  As I had originally posted it four years ago, even before I had my own blog, at folkbum's:

Here is a Thanksgiving Turkey recipe that also includes the use of popcorn as a stuffing - imagine that.

When I found this recipe, I thought it was perfect for people like me, who just are not sure how to tell when poultry is thoroughly cooked, but not dried out. Give this a try.

BAKED STUFFED TURKEY

10-12 lb. Turkey
1 cup melted butter
1 cup stuffing (Pepperidge Farm is good.)
5 cups uncooked popcorn (ORVILLE REDENBACHER 'S LOW FAT)
Salt/pepper to taste

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Brush Turkey well with melted butter, salt, and pepper. Fill cavity with stuffing and popcorn. Place in baking pan with the neck end toward the back of the oven.Listen for the popping sounds. When the turkey's ass blows the oven door open and flies across the room, it's done.

Imagine the look on your loved ones' faces as you show off your culinary skills.

Do More Than Remember This Memorial Day

It struck me this morning that this Memorial Day weekend has a new and significant meaning for me and many of my fellow Wisconsinites.

Sure there will be the picnics and the cookouts.  There still will be the parades and the flag waving.  There will be still politicians make big speeches honoring those that have given their all for us.

But this year, Memorial Day is much more than any of that.

Ask any American what Memorial Day means and you will hear the same pat answers about how it's to honor the men and women in the armed forces who died to protect our country and our freedom.  This is all true, of course.  But it is no longer enough.

We must do more than remember why these brave men and women made the ultimate sacrifice for us.

In this day and age, when Scott Walker and the Fitzgerald Boyzzzz and the rest of WISGOP are trying to systematically strip us of our civil rights and even our constitutionally protected rights, such as free speech, waving a flag or eating a brat is no longer enough.

We must fight to keep and protect what they had sacrificed their lives for.  We must stop this wholesale assault on our right to our rights, our livelihoods, and everything we as Wisconsinites and Americans believe in and stand for.  This is a fight that should never have happened in our state or our country.  It is unbelievable that it was even allowed to start.  But this fight is now upon us and it is a fight we must win if we want to remain the free and just and proud people we think we are.

You, gentle reader, and I, are now as much needed as the soldier that died on some foreign land to protect our freedoms.  We will not need to make that sacrifice, thank God, but we will need to give our time, our energy, and our money to help remove those that are trying to take our freedoms.  So find some time this weekend to help out in an area near you, whether it is to help keep someone who respects us in office, or to replace someone who would rather sell our rights to the highest bidder.

If you can't go canvassing, then do a phone bank.  If you don't like calling and talking to strangers, there are still other ways you can help, from stuffing envelopes to data entry.  Just find your nearest union hall, or contact your local party office, or even the politician's campaign office and just ask how you can help.

And don't do it just this weekend, but with whatever time you can spare, even if it's only a couple of hours, until this assault on our rights and freedoms is repelled once and for all.

If we don't do this, they will win and we all will lose.  And we will dishonor the sacrifice of those brave men and women by proving they died in vain.

So What Happens Now?

Folklore says that on Groundhog's Day, when the groundhog comes out of it's borrow, if it is cloudy and the groundhog doesn't see its shadow, it means that spring will come early.  However, if the groundhog does see its shadow, it means that spring won't come until late.

The question is: What happens to us now in Wisconsin, when the groundhog can't even get out of its burrow due to the blizzard?  Does that mean it can't see it's shadow, so an early spring is coming? Or does it mean that, since it couldn't even leave the burrow, that we are in an eternal winter?

And how can a Wisconsin groundhog, named Wynter at that, be such a wimp?

This Is Halloween

An Interesting Three Day Juxtaposition

Today is Samhain, or Halloween, if you prefer. It is also known as All Hallow's Eve.

Tonight's the night when all sorts of bugaboos are supposed to roam the land. Ghosts, ghouls, goblins and things that go bump in the night. Witches, when not running for public office in Delaware, go flying through the night sky. Zombies want to eat your brains, vampires want to drain your veins, and Republicans want to steal your soul.

Then, Monday is All Saint's Day, or All Hallows Day. This is a day of solemn celebration for Catholics and is meant to commemorate the beatified. It is a day when all that is good reign over the earth.

Tuesday is another Catholic holiday known as All Souls Day. It is also Election Day. That is of course when the forces of good enjoin in battle against the forces of Republicans evil, for the soul of the nation and the state.

It's kind of neat the way they all fit together, isn't it?
