Ronald Reagan Opposed Open Carry

From off of twitter, I found this:

The controversy about carrying guns in public is not new. In 1967, however, the political alignments on this issue were completely different. Many conservatives (and others) objected when the Black Panthers insisted on exercising this right. In response, Governor Ronald Reagan signed the Mulford Act banning the carrying of guns in public.

Remember just 5 years earlier in 1962 Reagan became a Republican

1962 Reagan formally switched to the Republican Party the same year, revealing, "I didn't leave the Democratic Party.

Remember that Governors and Presidents don’t make law - The California State legislature passes a law, the Mulford Act, prohibiting the carrying of firearms in any public place, effectively outlawing Black Panther safety patrols in Oakland.

Educate yourself what was happening in California in 1967 (including the race riots)

It doesn't matter when Reagan switched, just that he was when he signed the bill into law. He did not write it, true, but he did enact it.

I don't consider a pro-gun site to be an objective source of information, just as I wouldn't trust a strictly anti-gun site.

  4. Yes, the black panther safety patrols were disbanded in Oakland and Los Angeles. The vacuum created was filled by one Tookie Williams, leader of a newly formed young mens social athletic group called the Cripts.
