Walker Sues Feds For Right To Shame The Poor

Fresh off his official kick off of his presidential bid, Scott Walker showed the American people that he means business and that there is no limit to the amount of taxpayer money he is willing to spend in order to throw red meat to his base. On Tuesday, he announced that he is suing the federal government for the right to shame the poor by drug testing food stamp recipients:
In a statement, Walker said testing people for drugs was part of a "compassionate approach to ensuring individuals on certain public assistance programs are workforce ready."

"Our most recent budget builds on our record of enacting big, bold entitlement reforms to restore programs to their original purpose — a safety net, not a hammock," his statement said. "We are focused on helping people move from government dependence to independence because we want people to know the dignity that comes from work."

Walker has made the drug testing plan a central campaign theme since last year when he sought re-election.

Sherrie Tussler, executive director of the Hunger Task Force, said the federal law is clear that states cannot add extra rules when it comes to food stamp programs.

"They're obviously spending taxpayer dollars on a political program," Tussler said. "Where did the assumption come from in the first place that everybody who's unemployed is on drugs? It's insane."
As Susie Madrak pointed out when Walker first started floating this idea, it doesn't work and is often found to be unnecessary at best and sometimes illegal:
Walker’s attempt to police the poor faces legal hurdles that have derailed similar, recent laws in Georgia and Florida. Wisconsin would become the 12th state to have a drug testing law on the books for anti-poverty program participants. At the federal level, conservatives have pushed legislation to prevent federal aid dollars from being spent at or even near marijuana dispensaries in states where that drug is legal.Numerous critics say such policies are unnecessary and stigmatizing of low-income families who rely on public assistance programs. Drug testing for unemployment insurance benefits is “expensive and redundant,” according to National Employment Law Project senior staff attorney Rebecca Dixon. No state would provide unemployment insurance to someone who lost their job because of drug use or a failed drug test, Dixon said, because a drug-related discharge would be disqualifying. “The uninsurance program is based on work. Your former work and your willingness to work underwrite the insurance. It’s based on things that are related to your job loss,” Dixon said in an interview. “If the drug use is related to the job loss, it’s already covered in the law. So there’s no need to create a law to drug test every single person.”

Several states have implemented program’s like the one Walker has promised, but the outcomes of the testing regimes suggest Dixon and other critics are right. Tennessee has found one drug user out of 800 welfare recipients tested. With an overall drug use rate of 8 percent in Tennessee, the crackdown indicates that the poor are 64 times less likely to use drugs than everyone else. Utah spent $30,000 testing welfare recipients and produced just 12 positive tests. While 6 percent of Utahns overall say they use drugs, the state’s tests found drug use by just 2.5 percent of those tested and 0.2 percent of the total welfare recipient population. Florida’s version of the system found the rate of drug use is four times lower among welfare recipients than among the general population. (Courts have ruled Florida’s system unconstitutional, but Gov. Rick Scott (R) remains committed to a program that would spend hundreds of millions of dollars on the tests each year.)
There are two reasons why Walker is pursuing this unconscionable action and neither one has to do with fiscal conservatism or Walker's "compassionate conservatism."

One is that it gets Walker cheap press that he can use as red meat for the extremists that he is trying to win over.

Secondly, and I have seen this all to often when Walker was Milwaukee County Executive, it will give Walker a chance to claim a fiscal crisis. Walker will claim that his budget expected to save so much money through this testing and when those savings don't materialize....Ta da! Instant fiscal crisis that will give him an excuse to cut those services.

Walker's self-serving manipulativeness is only exceeded by his malfeasance.

Mandela Barnes For Governor

By Jeff Simpson

Everyone knows that the Democrats do not have a candidate yet for Governor.  Some people think it is a good strategy to wait as long as possible to declare, and some of us think that we need to get candidates out early talking to voters since we have a decided money disadvantage.

However I think we are missing the boat on potential candidates so let me bring one to the forefront!

Mandela Barnes for Governor!

Mandela Barnes was born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and graduated from John Marshall High School. He went on to attend Alabama A&M University and after college he became an organizer and moved back home to Milwaukee. He had served in a number of capacities before being elected, including the Mayor's office and as a youth and workforce development specialist. In 2012, he was awarded with the Democratic Party of Wisconsin's "Grassroots Organizer of the Year" award.

On November 6th, 2012, Mandela was elected to represent the 11th Assembly District

Plus, Representative Barnes has been there.  He has spent time on Food stamps and has not forgotten!

State Rep. Mandela Barnes (D-Milwaukee) says he keeps a reminder of his days receiving food stamps.

Barnes was interviewed last week by liberal Madison-area talk show host John "Sly" Sylvester about statements made by state Sen. Glenn Grothman (R-West Bend), who said food stamps were making some young people dependent on government.

"When I was on food stamps, I had a job. And I tell people that all the time. I am not ashamed to say that there was a time where I received food stamps," Barnes said on WEKZ-FM (97.3).
"I still have my Quest card, actually, in my bathroom, so when I wake up and brush my teeth in the morning, I'm reminded it was not that long ago that I was in that position.

"That's why I feel my opinion is very valid.  I was employed when I received food stamps. My hours were cut at the job that I was working. And the funny thing is, the place I worked provided job training, which is the irony of it all."

Wait Til Dean Kaufert Gets Home!

By Jeff Simpson

BIG and I mean BIG, government Wisconsin republican Dean Kaufert, with the approval of the Speaker of the ASSembly Robin Vos, have authored a bill telling you what you must eat daily!  Seriously!

The party that threw a fit when NYC Mayor Bloomberg wanted to ban big gulp soda's, is now planning your daily meals.  You can not make this stuff up!

if Pillsbury or a competitor had any business sense, they would make a big donation to Robin Vos and they could pass a law telling us we can only use their products and recipes.

Unbelievable!

FoodShare Reform legislation, authored by Rep. Dean Kaufert [R – Neenah], passed the Assembly State Affairs committee Tuesday, April 30 on a 7-2 vote. An amendment to the bill which was also passed by the committee added specificity to the reform proposal and would require FoodShare recipients to use at least 2/3 (67%) of their monthly benefits on staple food products. Eligible staple food products would include the items on the WIC list, meat, pork, chicken, fish, and vegetables.

“The FoodShare Reform legislation will make sure we continue to help those truly in need in our communities with basic food necessities, while at the same time reduce the abuse and misuse of this program,” Kaufert said. “The original intent of the food stamp program was to provide the basic necessities, not luxury items and this bill will move us back in that direction.”

Those takers in society dont need ketchup or mustard or salt or pepper or what bread.  They will eat what the Wisconsin republicans tell them to eat and they will expect a "thank you"card n return!

You can tell by the way Robin Vos runs his own life that he more capable of running your life than you are!

Republican Crazies - Part 2!

We brought you the story recently about "Republican crazies"...well unfortunately for America, the fun never ends!

Let us start with former California republican Senatorial Candidate Carly Fiorina.

“Let us accept Rev. Al’s point and the president’s point about fairness,” Fiorina replied. “But equally, it is not fair that public employee union pensions and benefits are so rich now that cities and states are going bankrupt and college tuition is going up 25 and 30 percent or police and firefighters are being cut. There’s a lot that isn’t fair right now.”

Carly Fiorina was the ousted CEO of Hewlett Packard, whose claim to fame was laying off 18,000 + American workers and leaving with a $42,000,000 pay off when she was fired.   She also tried to run for Senate in CA where she ended up paying about $5.5 Million dollars of her own money to unsuccessfully buy the seat.  This is the woman who tells us that public workers are so rich?

Secondly is Fox news contributor Andrea Tantaros, showing us that anyone can be a republican pundit!

STUART VARNEY (HOST): Could you live on $133 per month for food?
TANTAROS: I should try it because do you know how fabulous I’d look? I’d be so skinny. I mean, the camera adds ten pounds, it really does. I’d be looking great.

Since bad luck comes in three's here we go:  Bailed out Wall St. Firm Goldman Sachs CEO  Lloyd Blankfein thinks that the "Entitlements have to be contained".   Blankfein is worth approximately $450,000,000 and pulls down an annual salary of $55,000,000.   Blankfein also feels that the average American, who is retired and pulling in a Social Security check of $1230, is the person who is breaking the system.  And this guy runs a company?!?!?!?!

Eric Hovde - Humble Hero

Its been an interesting week for Washington DC resident, turned Wisconsin US Senate hopeful, he went from whining about people caring about the poor, to pretending he did not say what we have on video to telling us what a humble hero he actually is!

"I have done more for people that are economically disadvantaged than probably — and I've never talked about it publicly because I keep it very low-profile — than all but for a very few people in our society," Eric Hovde  told a forum at the Madison Club
Hovde then was so impressed with himself, that he "choked up" explaining all of the good he has done

You get a little emotional sometimes because, you know, you've put enormous amounts of your life work (into something) and I've given beyond what anybody normally does — time, money, effort — and to have someone make this kind of attack?"

Yes he keeps a very low profile, he does not like to talk about it, unless of course he has an audience to tell it to that is.   Hovde then (as I have said, listen to them and let them tell us who they are), could not quite let it go.   While he has tried to transform himself this week, he also has come full circle.  He started the week complaining that the poor get too much press coverage and he ends the week upset that they actually get to eat!

In an interview with the State Journal, Hovde said his irritation is with fraud within the food-stamp system, which he called "massive." A system rife with fraud won't endure, and it won't be there for the people who truly need it, he said.

He said he talks equally as much, if not more so, about corporate fraud. "What we have is everybody abusing the system, from the big corporate side to the social side," he said.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates the food-stamp fraud rate is about 1 percent, costing about $750 million a year. Hovde thinks that number is "woefully off."

Eric Hovde,  who used to teach his clients how to “Let Uncle Sam Pay for Your Acquisition", has taken time out of his busy schedule, of campaigning, buying vacation homes and giving to republican
politicians to actually research the US food stamp program enough that he knows that the US Department of Agriculture, who works with this everyday, is "woefully off" in their numbers.  (Some quick advice for Doug Erickson - a follow up question of "what do you base that on?" would have been nice.).

This week has proven that Eric Hovde is a true humanitarian and all around amazing guy!  Just ask him!

PS:   Tammy Baldwin could use your help, since she will actually represent Wisconsin and not her own ego!
