Did you have the same reaction when a majority of Wisconsin’s voters chose Bill Clinton again in 1996, Al Gore in 2000, John Kerry in 2004 and Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012?
Except that she wasn't that young and not drunk at all. She meant what she said and she said it. I've read a bunch of my old stuff in the past week and I don't have to apologize for any of it. I'd write all of it again -- perhaps with a lot less use of the phrase "of course" -- I used that a lot. What I wrote was part of what I was and still part of what I am. I think college writers are all proud of what they wrote and they still have the same world view -- they just go after their goals in different ways. I know I do.
Bradley certainly has. She has never swerved off the nut-right political path, serving as president of the radical-right bunch of lawyers called the Federalist Society and all manner of other right-wing groups and causes. As late as 2006, Bradley was writing about how pharmacists shouldn't be "forced" to be "a party to murder" by doing their job and filling birth control prescriptions. It is written in the same kind of deliriously clueless writing from her Marquette days, without the name-calling. The student apple didn't fall far from the adult tree.
Bradley is simply not a good fit, and she has demonstrated this in ways many and varied. It's not just about the (heinous) opinions spouted in college newspaper columns. Add in the money taken from right-wing political organizations, and her seeming disinterest in the judicial process (leaving oral arguments early to speak at a conservative fundraiser, casting the deciding vote in a crucial case essentially negating the Fourth Amendment even though she wasn't present for arguments), and it becomes crystal clear that this is a person unfit for the job.
This should serve as a stark lesson in the pitfalls of promoting people beyond their qualifications simply because they've been loyal to you or your cause. That's called cronyism and reliance upon it only leads to corruption. Not only that, but it tends to also lead to the destruction of systems people rely on to seek real justice and to live decently.
If Bradley were half the jurist she claims to be, she would own up to having been promoted beyond her capacity and drop out of the race. Something tells me that won't happen, especially given the combination of silence and deferral she's done since these most recent revelations.
It's up to Wisconsin voters to make it clear that we will not accept cronies and ideological puritans on the highest court in the state and that we value checks and balances. That means electing judges who demonstrate clear judicial impartiality, hard work and real curiosity and critical thinking.
"I wrote opinion pieces 24 years ago on a variety of issues, and they are opinions that some people may agree with, some people might disagree with," said Bradley in an interview with The Capital Times.“To those offended by comments I made as a young college student, I apologize, and assure you that those comments are not reflective of my worldview,” said Bradley in a press statement.
I cannot judge what is in Rebecca Bradley’s heart, but these read to me like the apologies of someone who feels bad their past caught up with them, not the apologies of someone truly regretful. ‘To those offended’ makes it sound like she feels bad for offending potential voters, not for having written the column in the first place.
Unless I'm mistaken, it looks like every right wing flack and corporate lobbyist is getting media time defending Rebecca Bradley's unforgivable commentary that can't be reversed; can you still be a conservative and take back saying a majority of Clinton voters are either totally stupid or entirely evil? They're saying that now for gods sake. Or how about "degenerate queers," words no one else uses. And that's her public face.
It’s worth considering the context of the times when The Marquette Tribune ran Bradley’s op-ed and letters to the editor. AIDS was the big scary disease that at any moment was going to spread to the heterosexual community at epidemic levels, or so we were told. There was a real debate at how much and what kind of “AIDS education” was appropriate, and certainly this was true on Marquette, which was once a Catholic university.Edit note: Wiggy is once again wrong, a little research shows that by 1992 we had a pretty good understanding of AIDS, and how it was not just a gay disease. Magic Johnson had announced he had contracted AIDs in 1991 and truly made it a national discussion.
Homosexuality did not have the acceptance it has now. This was before former President Bill Clinton ordered “don’t ask, don’t tell,” for the military. It was certainly before Clinton signed the Defense of Marriage Act, which was a federal effort to try to stop the courts from imposing gay marriage on the states. It was before President Barack Obama said he was opposed to gay marriage, and before his “growth” on the issue in 2012 and his sudden support for gay marriage.
It was at that time that a college kid tried to attract a little attention by throwing around language that today would have caused a near riot on campus. It was all but forgotten until it was dug up by an organization led by a political hatchet man who recently referred to a female
reporterformer governor* as a “racist anus.”

The matter was brought to light in February after liberal advocacy group One Wisconsin Now disclosed that the Green Bay School District received a request from the voucher advocates.Now, I love me some One Wisconsin Now and have relied on their research and reporting a lot. I have the highest esteem for Scot Ross. I consider myself to be fortunate to call him my friend. Trust me, the state would be in even more dire straits if it weren't for these good people.
“I think this points to a larger concern that public education advocates have about the unaccountable privatization movement and that is they see children as commodities and our children’s education is a product to generate profit from,” said OWN executive director Scot Ross.
Because some school districts either allow a student’s information to be included in all directory data requests or none, Ross said “it doesn’t seem fair a kid can’t be in a yearbook just because they don’t want to get calls at their house from some private entity.”
Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, defending proposed budget cuts for higher education, took a swipe at university professors who he said could be “teaching more classes and doing more work.”The best leaders, lead by example, so our friends at One Wisconsin Now, wanted to see what kind of example that Scott Walker was leading:
“Maybe it’s time for faculty and staff to start thinking about teaching more classes and doing more work and this authority frees up the [University of Wisconsin] administration to make those sorts of requests,” Walker (R)said Wednesday on Milwaukee radio station WTMJ.
According to a review of records obtained through the state open records law:
- Gov. Walker used a state car on at least 365 days to get to partisan political events between January 2011 and August 2014;
- Particularly heavy campaign reimbursements of $16,000 for use of state car between March and June 2012
Ross noted that while it was Gov. Walker’s divisive policies that triggered a recall election, his use of state resources to campaign in Wisconsin was also very heavy in the lead up to the 2012 Presidential election. Walker used a state car for political purposes 23 days in October 2012.
- Total spending by Walker for using a state car for his personal political activity is over $66,000 through August of 2014.
The travel records do not include out-of-state travel. According to a review of Gov. Walker’s campaign finance records by U.S. Rep. Mark Pocan, Walker has spent nearly $1 million to charter jets to travel across the country to shake down donors from New York to California and everywhere in between to further his own political fortunes.
And Scott Walker closed with a promise: "I'm going to come back(to Iowa) many more times in the future."
According to the county ethics code: "No county public official or employee shall use his/her public position or office to obtain financial gain or anything of substantial value for the private benefit of himself/herself or his/her immediate family, or for an organization with which he/she is associated."To make this whole sordid affair even more sickening, she is using her office to raise funds for her father's funeral even as she voted to deny funding for indigent burials. (Over 300 families in Milwaukee County use indigent burial funds every year.)
Michael Maistelman, a lawyer who specializes in election law and who has represented the campaigns of prominent Democrats, said it appears Alexander is using her position for private gain.
"The question is would she be getting donations if she were not an elected public official," he said. "Would donations be made, or are they being made, because of who she is and her position."
With campaign contributions, contributors must give their name, address, employer and report the amount to make sure there's transparency, he said. Candidates must periodically file campaign finance reports that make that information public.
With an anonymous contribution, he said, someone could legitimately question whether there has been a violation of the public trust. That donor could be trying to get something from the county, but you don't know, Maistelman said.
"The law is clear and must be enforced," said Scot Ross, executive director of One Wisconsin Now, in filing the complaint. "No elected official can use their status to raise personal funds, regardless of the circumstances."
Any anonymous gifts through the YouCaring.com site would make it difficult for the public to know who may be giving to Alexander and to determine if individuals with business before the county may be attempting to influence her, the complaint states.
Established in 2011, the Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty (WILL) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit advertising itself as seeking to “advance the public interest in the rule of law … in partnership with like-minded individuals and organizations.”
In reality, the right-wing Bradley Foundation has been the almost exclusive underwriter of WILL’s activities. For the years in which Federal IRS records are available for both the Bradley Foundation and WILL, 2011 and 2012, Bradley funds accounted for over 90 percent of the total money WILL reported raising. (NOTE – WILL has released their 2013 990, however at this time the 2013 990 for the Bradley Foundation has not been released.)
Why is this significant? The President and CEO of the Bradley Foundation, Michael Grebe, has also served as a chair of Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker’s campaign since 2010.
A review of their case filings and other documents reveals that their activities show a remarkably close relationship to the policy and political ambitions of Gov. Scott Walker. In fact, WILL has gone so far as to threaten legal action against the school board on which Gov. Walker’s November election opponent sits.
In sum, Gov. Walker has the benefit of a well-funded “public interest” law firm at the ready to defend and promote his interests in court and in the media.

Gov. Walker’s desperation tax scheme is on its way to becoming law, and for the average property taxpayer it adds up to a “savings” of all of $1.08 a month, for a total of $13 a year, in 2013.
Our research uncovered that Gov. Walker didn’t even start drafting the bill until the same day he had his press conference announcing it!

“The freedom that comes along with announcing you’re not running for reelection is that you can vote against crap like this,” said Sen. Bob Jauch, D-Poplar, describing the property tax relief bill that passed the state Senate with bipartisan support on Tuesday.
Jauch and four other Democrats were the sole votes against the $100 million measure that Gov. Scott Walker called the Legislature into special session to approve. Even Senate Minority Leader Chris Larson, D-Milwaukee, a vociferous Walker critic who was first elected by ousting a conservative Democrat in a primary, grudgingly voted for the bill after arguing that property tax relief would not have been necessary if Republicans had not made such dramatic cuts in aid to school districts in recent years.
“If a Democrat is up for reelection votes against it, you can bet that becomes a major argument against that candidate,” explained Jauch, who said he believes the bill will go down as one of the “two most pathetic tax cuts in state history.” The other instance he pointed to was a $20 rebate championed by former Democratic Gov. Marty Schreiber 35 years ago
Burke says in an interview with The Associated Press on Tuesday that "there's no doubt tax cuts are very good." She says no one can argue with a tax cut, but she is looking at the longer-term implications.

Madison - Gov. Scott Walker's latest campaign finance filing fails to disclose employment information, as required by state law, for 240 large contributions, according to an analysis by One Wisconsin Now. Going back to 2009, when Walker began his run for Governor in earnest, his reports have failed to disclose legally required employer information for 7,512 big money donors giving over $100 totaling $2,330,197.98 in contributions.
One Wisconsin Now Executive Director Scot Ross commented, "We're not just talking about one instance of sloppy bookkeeping here. Gov. Walker has a long and well-established pattern of complete and utter contempt for following the law when it comes to disclosing the required information about the big money givers footing the bill for him to pursue his political ambitions."
Wisconsin State Statute section 11.06(1)(b) requires candidates and officeholders disclose, "The occupation and name and address of the principal place of employment, if any, of each individual contributor whose cumulative contributions for the calendar year are in excess of $100," on their campaign finance reports. One Wisconsin Now has filed a complaint with the state Government Accountability Board against the Walker campaign for its violations of this statute.

While Democrats did very well in the Nov. 6 election, union households represented the smallest share of the Wisconsin vote in at least 20 years -- 21%, down from 26% in 2008, 28% in 2004 and 32% in 2000, according to exit polls.
“Their power before was the power of numbers, both in terms of turning people out and more important how much money they could draw from that,” said GOP Gov. Scott Walker, when asked about the union numbers in a recent interview.
Walker said the changes in labor law mean public workers aren’t forced to spend their money on union dues. He also argued it will lead to more open political competition for the support of those former union members, rather than Democrats being able to automatically expect that support through unions.
Union officials say the numbers are more evidence that Walker’s labor policies had a political purpose -- damaging the organizational, financial and voting power of the union movement.
“It pretty dramatically demonstrates the real purpose of Act 10 was not a budget matter but a direct attempt to undermine the influence of working people and unions,” said Bruce Colburn, vice president of SEIU Health Care Wisconsin. “Certainly having less and less members (for unions) to talk to hurts in terms of the ability to elect supporters of working people.”
Hall was set to make $120,000 when he took the full-time position in January and in February received a $65,000 raise, according to the Wisconsin Reporter.
Walker made the decision to increase the CEO’s salary, Hall said, and the WEDC board’s compensation committee approved the increase. Hall said the $185,000 fell in the mid-range of a recommendation by an outside consulting firm to the WEDC.
If the right-wing takeover of our state shows one thing, it's that Republicans know how to do political corruption right. Forget the penny-ante stuff that landed Georgia Thompson in the clink. A new report by One Wisconsin Now adds a twist to the jaw-dropping shamelessness over at the WEDC.
The report details how Walker's campaign and the Republican Governors Association raked in nearly $650,000 in donations from the owners and employees of the businesses that benefited from the WEDC's largess. Walker, who is chairman of the WEDC board, received $429,060 in campaign contributions from the businessmen, who got grants and tax credits from his new job-creation agency.
The Virginia-based Republican Governors Association, which spent almost $15 million electing Walker and defending him in the recall, got $218,899 from the same group of people.
Who paid for their WEDC-sponsored benefits? You and I, of course.
And what did we get? A state economy that still ranks among the worst in the nation for job creation and wage growth.
A review of campaign finance records by One Wisconsin Now has found that Gov. Walker's campaign and the Republican Governors Association (RGA) have raked in over $614,000 in donations from individuals associated with businesses receiving tax credits through the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC). Walker serves as chair of the board entrusted with overseeing the operations of the quasi-private WEDC.You can find the link to their chart in the above press release or by clicking here. One Wisconsin Now Executive Director Scot Ross commented, "Gov. Walker touted the creation of this quasi-private agency as key part of his strategy to create jobs. While WEDC has failed to perform as advertised for us, it sure seems to have been a useful tool in his quest for campaign cash."
The review of campaign finance records revealed that the employees and owners of companies receiving state tax credits authorized by the economic development agency between January of 2011 and March 2013 donated $395,930 to Gov. Walker's 2010 campaign and through 2012. The Virginia-based Republican Governors Association, that has been extremely active in supporting Walker to the tune of an estimated $5 million in 2010 and $9.5 million in the 2012 recall election, received $218,899 from individuals associated with these same businesses over the same time period.
Since its inception, serious questions have been raised about the lack of accountability and potential for improper dealings by the agency. Many of those fears were realized when an independent audit of the agency revealed millions of dollars in state economic development funds were going untracked, basic business audit and compliance procedures were being ignored and employees were using public funds to purchase items like itunes gift cards, football tickets and alcohol.
In addition under Walker, Wisconsin has consistently been rated as one of the worst states in the nation for job creation and wage growth.

Ross concluded, "Taxpayers have gotten the short end of the stick from Gov. Walker's scandal plagued WEDC. It appears about the only thing Walker's WEDC has been good for is helping to fill his own campaign coffers."

We’re looking at all different kinds of precincts and all sorts of same-day registrations and I know people will go “oh, we don’t have fraud and abuse in our elections,” but what can’t we have voter ID when the majority of the people in Wisconsin wanted it. We passed it. The governor signed it. Why should one judge in Dane County be able to hold it up?
To speak so affirmatively about this epidemic, as you see it, of voter impropriety, I would think you could provide me in a short amount of time the number of documented cases of voter impersonation in Wisconsin in the last several elections and the citations showing such. A recent pro-Romney super-PAC television ad features Joseph Buechel of Wisconsin, who identifies himself as a small business owner, decrying the Obama Administration's tax policy. However, tax records obtained by One Wisconsin Now show Buechel's business, Natural Stone Veneers International, Inc., has paid nothing in state corporate income taxes in any of the last five years, and, based on his reported personal state income tax liability, it appears he, like 97% of small business owners, would not be affected by President Obama's proposal to allow the Bush tax cuts for those with incomes over $250,000 to expire.Gee, why is it that Republican arguments never hold up when you shed a little light on them?
One Wisconsin Now Executive Director Scot Ross commented, "Mr. Buechel has a lot to say about taxes and the Obama administration for someone whose business hasn't paid a dime in state corporate income taxes for the entire first term of the President and who would almost certainly would not pay more by President Obama's proposal to ask millionaires to pay their fair share of taxes."
Information obtained by One Wisconsin Now from the Department of Revenue shows the business Mr. Buechel owns, Natural Stone Veneers International, Inc., paid no state corporate income tax between 2007 and 2011.
One Wisconsin Now also reviewed Department of Revenue records of the personal state income tax paid by Mr. Buechel between 2007 and 2011. The tax liability he reported appears to be based on an annual income far below $250,000, meaning he would not be paying any tax increase that could occur if, as President Obama has proposed, the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans were allowed to expire.
Grebe said the donation had nothing to do with Walker’s campaign.Yeah, and if you believe that, you'll believe that Brian Sikma and Christian Schneider are bona fide reporters.
“We have always maintained strict separation between my personal political involvement and the foundation’s activities, which are not political,” Grebe said.
In response, Grebe said the grant was never secret - Bradley annually publishes a list of grant recipients - and the billboards were not racist. He noted that the billboards appeared in such places as Ozaukee and Washington counties.As one commenter on Bice's article pointed out, if one wore their white hood and robe in Waukesha, that means they're not racist because that's a predominately white area, right?
OK, I have to admit that I just love the fact that it was the braggart Sykes that gave up his buddies.Something that I had omitted in that post is that the Bradley Foundation also bankrolls the Wisconsin Policy Research Institute, where Sykes is the editor.
For those that are unfamiliar with the details, Sykes had an affair with Bradley Foundation spokeswoman Janet Riorden. He eventually married her after divorcing Justice Diane Sykes. He also had her on his shows, but under the alias Liz Woodhouse, because he believes in being open and honest his listeners.
A joint investigation by theGrio news service and One Wisconsin Now has uncovered that Milwaukee’s Einhorn Family Foundation is the “private family foundation” that anonymously funded voter suppression billboards in Wisconsin in September 2010 and again this year. A review of IRS documents also showed Milwaukee’s Bradley Foundation, headed by Scott Walker’s campaign co-chair Michael Grebe, and one of the largest sources for right wing funding in America, gave the Einhorn Family Foundation a $10,000 grant, at the time the 2010 suppression billboards appeared, “to support a public education project.”OK, I have to admit that I just love the fact that it was the braggart Sykes that gave up his buddies.
One Wisconsin Now Executive Director Scot Ross said, “This was not an act of free speech, but an expression of racism as despicable as the ‘whites only’ signs of the Jim Crow South. We said we’d find out who was behind this, and we have.”

“We want to thank Bradley’s marquee personality, Charlie Sykes,” said Ross. “Sykes’ big mouth over the radio about his conversation with the then-anonymous donor and his long and personal ties to Bradley’s half-billion-dollar, right-wing empire led us to also scour the Bradley Foundation IRS records and find the Einhorn gift. So, thanks a million, Charlie.”
Ross believes there is no coincidence that Wisconsin-style tea party politics is spreading nationwide under Priebus’ tenure as national party chairThe amount of irrational hatred these people have is beyond comprehension. And the fact that they have as much power and influence as they do is utterly frightening and sickening.
“When voter suppression allegations have surfaced in Wisconsin for the past decade, the name Reince Priebus has always been close behind,” Ross told theGrio. In 2010, Priebus was cited by name, in an aborted voter caging plot targeting minorities and college students involving the Republican Party of Wisconsin, Americans for Prosperity and Wisconsin’s Tea Party leaders, including documents that referenced ‘billboards’ as part of the scheme multiple times.”
“In 2002, the Wisconsin state Elections Board enacted new guidelines for poll-watchers in response to a Priebus-led racially-charged voter intimidation scheme in Milwaukee,” Ross continued. “In 2008, Priebus’ Republican Party of Wisconsin sent out an email recruiting volunteers for alleged ‘inner city’ voter intimidation in Milwaukee. In 2012, it was uncovered Priebus’ RNC is behind an anonymous lawsuit intervening in a case involving our unconstitutional voter identification law. That this anti-American garbage is turning up in other states now that Priebus is running the RNC is of no surprise to us in Wisconsin given his career of scheming to deny legal voters their right to the franchise. Americans have always rejected politicians, like Reince Priebus, manipulating the voting system for partisan advantage and they will do it in this case as well.”

- $5 trillion in tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires that will either increase taxes on the middle class or explode the deficit;
- Slashing over $700 million from Medicare;
- Repealing ObamaCare and putting big insurance companies back in charge of health care decisions instead of patients and their doctor; and
- Reductions in Pell grants that help for students afford the costs of higher education.
One Wisconsin Now previously sponsored several “Run Against Walker” events, in which runners and walkers protested the attacks on the middle class by Gov. Scott Walker’s policies.
The people of Wisconsin clearly spoke on June 5th. Now, they are ready to move on. Sadly a liberal activist judge in Dane County wants to go backwards and take away the law making responsibilities of the legislature and the governor. We are confident that the state will ultimately prevail in the appeals process.As everyone knows, this is pure poppycock.

Governor Walker's reforms are saving state and local governments over $1 billion (and counting), and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported this week that Milwaukee Public Schools could save $1 billion on its own.
These reforms have passed the test before. Numerous legal challenges and a recall election weren't enough to take them down, and we are confident they will prevail once more. But we can't let one activist judge overturn the will of the people.
