Let's HOPE School Choice Starts Doing Better Protecting the Kids!

By Jeff Simpson

Jim Bender is head of the poorly named "School Choice" Wisconsin.

Readers of CogDis may remember Mr. Bender as the guy who did an open records request on numerous school districts throughout the state where he asked for all of the kids, names, addresses, phone numbers, pictures, activities, height, weight, etc.....

Luckily we were able to stop that, even if it did get Charlie Sykes knickers in a knot and he was successful in getting me kicked off of Purple WI.  We were successful in stopping some of Mr. Benders invasion of privacy of our children.

If you remember, I pointed out that now that Mr. Bender let it be known that this information was available to the world, thanks to some silly open records laws, anyone now has access to this information.  When I say anyone I mean anyone, people recruiting kids, cults and sexual predators.   I had no idea at the time that one was right under Mr. Benders nose.

The dean of a Milwaukee choice school was charged Monday with sexually assaulting a girl over the past several years, the fifth area educator to face sexual assault charges since December.Jermaine A. Evans, 32, dean of students and coach of the girls basketball team at HOPE Christian High, was being held in the Milwaukee County Jail.

The complaint charges two counts of sexual assault of a child, once in 2013 and once in 2014. Each offense is punishable by up to 25 years in prison and 10 years of extended supervision.

HOPE Christian Schools is a network of six schools that participate in the Milwaukee and Racine voucher programs. Its high school, where Evans has been girls basketball coach the past four years, is at 3215 N. King Drive.

Evans is currently on PAID leave.  Your taxpayer dollars at work!

While as is typical, when horrible things like this happen, Jim Bender is no where to be found.

Yet he is quick to heap praise.

“It is really difficult to not have an appreciation for what’s happening on the north side at Hope Christian School,” said Jim Bender, president of Wisconsin School Choice, which advocates for Wisconsin’s growing parental choice program.

Our Friends over at the also poorly named "Watchdog" even compared Hope Christian Schools to the John Wooden UCLA  championship winning college basketball teams.

“The near north side of Milwaukee has probably one of the biggest racial learning gaps of anywhere in the country. (Hope) put their school in the heart of that area to specifically address that problem,” Bender added. “And they have this unbelievable group of staff that is so committed, and that’s obvious with 100 percent of the students accepted to college four years in a row.”
The staff was very committed thats for sure and now the Dean of Students will be committed(for about 50 years).

Edit note:  Before I get the inevitable righty talking point of the success rate at HOPE Christian, understand that they are graduating about 30 kids a year.   Its much easier when you can pick and choose your kids and work with them more individually.  Unfortunately with the education cuts in WI and the bleeding of public education dollars by the for profit educationers like Mr. Bender that makes it impossible for public schools to give this intense personal education.

Here is Mr. Bender(center) celebrating the ten year anniversary of Hope "Christian"schools taking unaccuntable taxpayer money to fund his salary and school.   That is school choice lobbyist Jeff Fitzgerald sitting next to him(Robin Vos missed the picture).  A list of School Choice VIP's are here.

Jim Bender: Come Out, Come Out, Wherever You Are!

By Jeff Simpson

Milwaukee Voucher School Daughters of the Father Christian Academy, has already closed their doors this year, leaving about 150 students stranded.

Being a "Christian"School, you would think they would have owned up to closingt the doors so that DPI could help the kids find a new school, etc...  Unfortunately no, it took a tip from someone phoned into Fox6.

When the School Choice movement in Wisconsin is run by Scott Jensen, you do not expect honesty but the Founder of this school, Bishop Doris Pinkney takes the cake:

On Friday, FOX6 News got a tip call from someone who works closely with the school. The caller said the school was closed, and that students had been sent to another choice school, Travis Academy.
Bishop Doris Pinkney
Bishop Doris Pinkney
That's where we found Bishop Doris Pinkney, the founder of Daughters of the Father Christian Academy. She insisted her school was still open and kids were in the classroom on Friday, even though doors were locked and nobody came to the door.

With flat out lies like that, Bishop Doris, is angling for a spot on the American Federation For Choice campaign team in 2016.

It is no big deal though, because all that Scott Walker and the Republicans sent her in Wisconsin taxpayer dollars was $5.4 MILLION!   What's a few million dollars between friends, of course when Robin Vos and his crew start sending more and more of our public education money to schools like this there will be less for your children, but that is just a minor detail.   Besides Robin Vos does not have kids anyway!

The question I have is where is Scott Walker, Robin Vos and Scott Fitzgerald at times like this?  DO they not care that they just threw $5,400,000 of our taxpayer dollars down the drain?

Finally, where is Jim Bender on this? Why does he never seem to comment when these stories keep hitting the news over and over and over?  Isn't it about the children?

If you see this man, notify the authorities immediately, he appears to be missing.  Approach with care, but he appears to only be dangerous to our children's future.

Or else tweet them and ask them for our children's $5.4 Million dollars back!

Education Reform Vultures

By Jeff Simpson

We have brought you the stories of the disgusting acts of the "education reform" leaders(term used loosely), in WI.  From all of Scott Jensen's life work, to Jim Bender trying to get the height, weight and phone numbers of our children and even has trickled down to Zeus Rodriguez, the snake oil salesman from Milwaukee wanting to cash in on Texas school children now.

They are at it again, this time the education "reformers" are looking at ways to cash in on the riots in Baltimore:

Who sent this stupid tweet(since deleted)?  That would be the Jeanne Allen, senior fellow, President Emeritus and founder of the "Center for Education Reform".

Thar's GOLD in them thar classrooms!   And Jeanne wants to get her fingers on it as badly as Scott and Jim do!   It is unfortunate that our children are being used as collateral damage for their greed!

Public School Predators!

By Jeff Simpson

For some of you who have been following along(including internet trolls), I posted the following blog on Purple Wisconsin yesterday.  Apparently after much complaining from Jim Bender, it was taken down.

We know via data, that voucher schools, do not perform as well as public schools, but I was not aware that they were so far behind us in reading comprehension.   In NO WAY did I say or do I believe, or do I infer that Wisconsin School Choice = pedophilia.  They are not. They do not.
They are predators in the sense of wanting to get their hands on every public school penny they can but not beyond that.

That being said, when they demand this much personal information of public school students(which is not public records in my mind) it opens the door to many problems.   Now that people are aware that they can get these lists, Pandora's Box is wide open.   ANYONE can request these and ANYONE can then get them(sexual predators, ex-spouses, abusers, athletic stalkers, people looking to break into houses, tobacco companies, etc...).  This door is now open, and ONLY open because of what Mr. Bender has done here, and the public school children will be the ones paying the price.

We know this to be true and probable in Wisconsin, thanks to the predecessor of this - Verify the Recall.   Our friends on the right, thought it important to put everyone's personal information who signed the Recall Walker petitions, and our press was compliant in that.   This website led to anger confrontations, firings, and even death threats.   Even our governor checked it regularly to make sure and exact revenge on anyone who signed.   Now we are supposed to pretend by giving out such personal information to Wisconsin School Choice only good things will happen?

Wisconsin School Choice and Mr. Jim Bender are NOT pedophile's.  Period.  They also do not need to have this information.

Here is the blog in question(now the internet trolls, and hate radio fools, can stop pretending they have something on me):

---------------------------------------

Jim Bender is the President of the poorly named "school choice" Wisconsin.  Mr. Bender is also the face of the "For-Profit" School movement.   While Scott Jensen actually calls the shots, Jensen's tarred history makes it impossible for him to be the face of anything.
Mr. Bender has decided to make the public schools, and public money continue to work for him.  Mr, Bender is paid a King's ransom to take as much Wisconsin taxpayer public education dollars as he can get his hands on, and funnel to the private/voucher schools.  A parasite is someone that exists to take from another.
Mr.  Bender however, has reached a new low.   He wants to know everything about YOUR children.
School choice advocates have requested the names, addresses, phone numbers and grade levels of every student enrolled in 30 different public school districts, gearing up for a marketing campaign should lawmakers lift the enrollment cap on Wisconsin's statewide voucher program.
Directory information includes information such as students' names, addresses, telephone numbers, date and place of birth, major field of study, height, weight, athletic team participation, awards achieved and schools attended.
The information is key to rounding out important school items such as yearbooks, playbills, sports rosters, announcements to the media about student accomplishments and contact lists that help families communicate with each other.
Yes.  You read that right!  Mr. Bender wants to know everything about YOUR children.   There is a long history of private/voucher school employees run-in's with the law.  Let's look at this in context.
While Mr. Bender is no way Mr. Clark Jr., we do not know who will be handling these open records request, or who will ask for them now that they have been given the idea.

Now anyone who grabs this personal information will be able to know who is in the school musical, and will not be home every night for the few weeks of the performances.
* We know the tight knit group that Scott Walker has surrounded himself with includes Mr. Bender and Mr. Jensen.  It also includes Tim Russell, who has been described as Mr. Walkers right hand man.  Mr. Russell has had some very serious problems of his own.   Will Mr. Russell be in possession of this information?

Luckily he was caught.

Thanks to Mr. Bender, for those who are in the system and have not been caught, he just handed them a menu!
- Someone is now able to get the phone number and address for every 15 year old public school athlete in Wisconsin.
-  What if a sexual predator wants the names and addresses of every 13 year old public school boy in Wisconsin? We have all seen Dateline.  Then we must release this information.
-  The over the top fans, can now get the home addresses and phone numbers of all the possible Division one athletes in WI and stalk them trying to make sure they attend their school of choice.
-  Ex-Spouses, who have not been given custody, can now use ORR to find their children.
 -  There is of course the possibility that Mr. Bender wants this information so he can make sure and heavily recruit just the best students who were actively involved in all activities.  Or maybe he wants to stay away from any student who is obese.
-  Numerous other possibilities that we have not even thought of yet.  The possibilities are endless, as to what can be done with the private information of your children in the wrong hands.

There really is no good that can come of this, as the people who would want this are just predators using public school children as prey(to increase their profits or worse).
This needs to be stopped and there are ways you can do this!
1.  Representative Genrich and Senator Dave Hanson are working on a legislative fix, but we know the Republicans have no interest in any legislation put forth by Democrats.  Call your Representative and Senator and tell them to sign on.
2.  Call your local Superintendent and tell them that this is unacceptable and you want to be notified and opted out if anyone makes this request of your children.
3.  Contact "school choice" Wisconsin and tell them to leave your children alone.

George WIll Say Anything

George Will recently attempted to come to the rescue of W.I.L.L.(Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty)with his syndicated column.
The Justice Department’s perverse but impeccably progressive theory can be called “osmotic transfer.” It is called this by the Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty (WILL), which is defending Wisconsin children against Washington’s aggression.
I know most people think that W.I.L.L. is just a tool, used by Michael Grebe, to help advance Scott Walker's career and file frivolous lawsuits.  They also serve another purpose - desperately trying to privatize our public schools.      Which leads us to the question, of who in Wisconsin's, children are they defending exactly?
Not mine.  My children attend a public school that routinely outperforms private/voucher schools in WI.
Nor are they defending the casual observer, who is a parent of a special needs child either.  If  they were to rely on the President and General Counsel of W.I.L.L., to help them make an informed decision on what is the best option for their child.
Fellow Purple WIsconsin blogger Rick Esenberg, wrote a blog recently complaining that the voucher/private school(he mislabled it school choice)for-profit business was being unfairly scrutinized.
Mr. Esenberg told us that schools have to, by law, have to "take all comers"(with an exception for space.  While that is true, what Mr. Esenberg left out was that private/vouchers schools are currently being sued for "actively counseling students with disabilities out of their programs".
For those of you who would ask - Why would they recruit these students and the counsel them out, it is because of something we have in WI called the "third Friday count".  School and district budgets are determined by the number of students in attendance on this date.  If the privat/voucher school can just keep these children enrolled long enough to reach this important date, they can then keep the money the state designates per student.   They can also then send the special needs child back to public school, the money per pupil stays behind but the costs for educating that child does not.
Despite the hurdles, public schools welcome these children back, with open arms.  Not because of the money, which for a while is nonexistant, but because it is the right thing to do.
Secondly, Mr. Esenberg misses the story again as he says these students  "may not get the same services or accommodations in a private school that they will get in a public school."   The reality is they will NOT get the same services, because by law the private/voucher schools do not have to provide them.    A voucher school is required to offer only those services to assist students with special needs that it can provide with minor adjustments.    There are not many special needs students that just need "minor adjustments" especially when you are a school not prepared for them run by unlicensed teachers.
Then the closing argument that Mr, Esenberg makes is so incredibly mindboggling, that it makes me give thanks that it's not my money on retainer:
*  Public schools get funding to provide these services that is largely unavailable to choice schools.
Public schools do get funding(albeit it nowhere near enough for most of these students) hence the "public" in the title,  Private schools, hence the private used as an adjective, are private and do NOT get tax money to provide these services.
* Just as importantly, federal standards for accommodating students with disabilities do not - and ought not - apply wholesale to private schools. The value of school choice is to encourage a multiplicity of approaches
Democratically elected(well semi-democratically elected anyway) legislatures, who after much study (hopefully), have put together best practice,  for the way to treat special needs children in the schools,  that public schools have to comply 100% with,  are fine but if a school run by a profiteer, wants to send unlicensed teachers into a classroom of special needs children and use proven ineffective ways to teach them.   That is the way the cookie crumbles I guess.
*  Not all behavioral disabilities should be medicalized in the way typically encouraged by federal standards. Parents ought to be able to choose between alternative approaches for their children.
Seriously?  If Mr. Esenberg does not understand that every special needs child in a public school will have what we call an INDVIDUALIZED education program(IEP).  INDIVIDUALIZED being the key word there.
For those like the President of WILL who do not know what an IEP is:
Each public school child who receives special education and related services must have anIndividualized Education Program (IEP). Each IEP must be designed for one student and must be a truly individualized document. The IEP creates an opportunity for teachers, parents, school administrators, related services personnel and students (when appropriate) to work together to improve educational results for children with disabilities. The IEP is the cornerstone of a quality education for each child with a disability.
A team of individuals get together, and decide what is individually best,  for each individual student.   Parents already get to choose what is best for their own children.
If you are truly defending "Wisconsin's children" shouldn't you know what options are available to them currently?  Trying so hard to divert our desperately needed resources from public to private schools, It seems like you and your organization, are the one they need defending FROM!

School Choice Wisconsin Shows Their Hand

By Jeff Simpson

There has been much discussion lately about the poorly named 'School Choice" debate, and no matter how they run the numbers, charter schools under perform public schools every time.

Even Luther Olsen, has had enough of the BS.

State Sen. Luther Olsen (R-Ripon), chair of the Senate Education Committee, looks at the program differently than Vukmir. He said it's not about kids on the outside looking in to private schools; it's about kids on the inside looking out for a check.
"The question is, what is this purpose of this program? Is it a program to help poor kids get out of public schools, or is it a program to pay for the tuition of kids who are already in private schools?" Olsen said. "It's pretty obvious from the last two go-rounds (of applications) that it's the latter."
Olsen said the Legislature and governor will have to decide if the program is going to be a new entitlement program, and if so, how the state would pay for every child in a private school.
Its so rare to hear a republican in WI talk sense so make sure and read that quote again.

However the telling quote of this debate came from Terry Brown, vice president of voucher-advocacy group School Choice Wisconsin(emphasis mine):

Terry Brown, vice president of voucher-advocacy group School Choice Wisconsin, said there's a "natural suppression" in the number of overall applications because many parents and private schools didn't want to roll the dice on applying to participate with so few seats available under the enrollment cap.

Terry Brown is pointing out that if the odds are not stacked in their favor they are not interested.    School Choice Wisconsin, does not want to play if they can't guarantee a win.

Another subpar lesson that the voucher schools teach their children, along with a nice tell on what his interests are* for the future of WI!

*hint they are not in your best interest!

How bad are things for the School Choice movement now?  So bad that they have enlisted their gopher Christian Schneider to regurgitate a bunch of silly BS.

You know you are desperate when Michael Grebe loans his coffee boy out to your cause!

Moment of Truth For Public Education

By Jeff Simpson

Scott Walker was recently given a HUGE benefit of the doubt by Politifact!

"With the tax controls we already put in place, property taxes on a typical home in December of 2014 will actually be lower than they were in December of 2010."

The Republican governor says that even before his new plan for more property tax relief would kick in, he and GOP lawmakers already have lowered the typical bill by virtue of past tax controls they put in place.

Is he right?
In a very very clear one word answer -  NO!

A total of 35 school districts statewide have placed referendums on the April ballot, including Markesan, which is asking for $2.78 million to maintain programs and operations. Another eight school districts, including Lomira, held referendums on Feb. 18. All but one passed.

For 43 school districts in Wisconsin....the absolute answer is NO.  Property taxes are rising tremendously! Let's look at the Markesan District -

The tax impact of the referendum is estimated to be around $135 a year on a $100,000 home, $202.50 on a $150,000 home and $270 on a home valued at $200,000.
So the residents in Markesan can count on a $270/yr increase JUST TO KEEP THE SCHOOLS OPEN! I know they can use the "tools" and cut the fat, then everything will be fine.   Except they have been there done that:

Since 2005 the small rural school district has been losing state aid and was forced to cut its budget by almost $1.5 million. Cuts included a reduction in administrators, staff, busing contracts and employee benefits. In addition, three buildings have been consolidated into two.The district borrowed an additional $270,000 on a State Trust Fund loan to keep afloat.
Which proves yet another of Scott Walker's lies - education reform.  Scott Walker has enacted education devastation not reform.    The one thing he did reform though, was he is bringing people closer to God as the school board president of Markesan let's us know:

Kottke said another $1 million can’t be cut from the current budget.
“I am praying beyond praying that it passes,” she said.

Excellent campaign slogan for the republicans this year - vote for us then pray like crazy you survive!

This is of course not new to readers of Cogdis knows almost the exact same story is happening in Tomah!

In the Markesan district, maybe the 600 vote win for Rick Gudex is not looking so good now.

See Markesan School District, just to stay afloat, had to borrow $270,000.   American Federation For Children, led by formerly convicted felon Scott Jensen,  spent $325,000 alone on the Rick Gudex campaign(he won by 600 votes).

Let that sink in.

Now the term "School Choice" no longer means allowing kids to go to a private school on the taxpayer dime.  The republicans under Scott Walker, have defined school choice as do we choose to pay an unreasonable amount of taxes to keep our school open or do we just shut the doors on our public schools?

November will be a moment of truth for many districts in WI.  Do we continue voting republicans  who keep passing the buck on their necessary commitment to public education?  Do they even have a commitment to public education?   Why would we vote yes for a referendum and then vote in people who do not support public education? Do people understand that by having to pass referendums for your school district to survive, that the state government is NOT cutting your taxes but just passing the buck?  Does your local politician look at public education as an expense or an investment?   Do you want the best for your children and grandchildren?

People need to think long and hard, do research and vote for the person who best serves your families education needs,  NOT the person with your favorite letter behind their name!

True School Choice!

By Jeff Simpson

Scott Walker blows his dog whistle, by declaring this week "school choice" week and guess what......

The dogs come running! and thy are all trying to bark as loudly as they can to be the one dog noticed in a pack of rabid astroturf!

There was this, this and this to start and of course when the Governor needs to say something, Astroturf in Action rolls out the money and the red carpet to him!

It is time to stop the massive grab for our children's education funds!

For our factually challenged friends, we already have school choice,  For those who want to just steal our childrens education money for your own bank account - yes I mean you Scooter Jensen: Go climb under the floorboards where you belong!!

For the rest of you who truly care about (Y)our children's education, let us make sure that they are fully funded.   We can make sure that ALL of our kids,  get a solid education by funding our public schools.  We can make it so when we speak of "school choice" that means that our kids can choose between different languages, or a business department or Physics or advanced Biology.  Let us have enough staff to help the teachers and the students who need it.  Let the schools be fully staffed in nurses, counselors, social workers, etc ... to make sure and be able to help the kids who so desperately need it! let's stop with the stadardized tests and pay our teachers when they advance their careers academically.

That is TRUE school Choice, not the snake oil Scooter and Scotty are trying to sell us.

For the Sake of Public Education, Walker Has To Go!

Great letter in todays JSonline, written by Diane Ravitch, author of the bestselling book "The Death and Life of the Great American School System: How Testing and Choice Are Undermining Education" (Basic Books)

Here it is in it's entirety(emphasis mine):

If you are concerned about the future of public education in Wisconsin, vote to oust Gov. Scott Walker. Since his election in 2010, he has proved himself to be a steadfast enemy of the public schools.
In the world according to Walker, the best way to reform public education is to demoralize its teachers, attack the teachers' union and hand over more taxpayer dollars to privately managed charters and voucher schools.

He is wrong on every count. In his role as governor, he has a constitutional duty to preserve, protect and strengthen the state's democratic institutions. He has violated that trust by his ongoing efforts to undermine public education, which is a cornerstone of our democracy.

As a conservative, he should have done his best to strengthen the public schools, not tear them down. Conservatives don't blow up traditional institutions. His approach is radical, not conservative.
As the state's leader, he should have set a good example and thanked the teachers who do the public's work every day. Regardless of what the contract says, the typical teacher works 11-12 hours every day, preparing the next generation to take their place as citizens and workers. But instead of acting as a leader, Walker spent the past two years as the state's bully-in-chief, showering the state's teachers with disrespect and blaming them for the ills of an unequal and unjust society.

Walker thinks that he will improve education by getting rid of the union, which is the collective voice of the state's teachers. The nation's highest performing states-Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Connecticut-have strong unions, while the lowest performing states-in the Deep South-have weak unions or none at all. Very likely, what Walker really wants is to remove the teachers' voice when legislators are cutting the schools' budget. The best way to silence the strongest voice for public education in Madison is to weaken the teachers' union.

Walker has cut the budget, thus requiring public schools to lay off teachers, increase class sizes, close libraries, and reduce essential services on which needy children depend. Lest we forget, the victims of these budget cuts are children, the very children who will determine the future of the state in years to come.  Walker has expanded the voucher program, so that more children can use taxpayer dollars to enroll in religious schools. But he fails to mention that the Milwaukee voucher program has had unimpressive results. Twenty-two years later, the children in voucher schools get no better scores on the Wisconsin tests than children in Milwaukee's public schools.

Walker claims that competition among vouchers, charters, and public schools will lead to big improvements, but Milwaukee has had exactly that competition for the past two decades. According to the federal assessments, Milwaukee's public schools are one of the lowest performing in the nation. Competition did not make them improve, and the children in the alternative systems are doing no better. Black children in Milwaukee were supposed to be the beneficiaries of school choice, but the federal tests show that black students in Milwaukee have scores no better than black children in the Deep South.

Walker is determined to dismantle the public education system and to replace it with a choice system. But that won't be good for Wisconsin and it won't be good for children. No high-performing nation in the world demoralizes its teachers and creates alternatives to public education.

The best performing nations in the world have built a strong public education system. They respect their teachers. They do not judge them by student test scores. They do not launch public campaigns against their unions (in high-performing Finland, all the teachers and principals belong to the same union). The most successful nations recognize the importance of having teachers and principals who are dedicated professionals, not a revolving door of young college graduates. They understand that successful schools establish a culture of collaboration, not a culture of competition.

It's time for a change in Wisconsin. End the attacks on public education. End the attacks on teachers. It's time for leadership that seeks to build a better school system. It's time for a leader with a positive vision, a leader who puts the needs of children and communities first.
Thank you Diane!

Let's stop the circus, vote for Tom Barrett on June 5th:

Some "Choice" Terms

When conservatives refer to the privatization of education, they are fond of calling it "school choice." Anyone that is for this sort of privatization is identified as being "pro-choice."

However, it the word choice is applied to a woman's reproductive rights, in the eyes of a conservative, it becomes synonymous with "pro-abortion." They will portray the pro-choice individual somewhere just beyond Ed Gein or Jeffrey Dahmer, as if they want to go around and kill every fetus in the world.

Given these two uses that conservatives have for the word "choice," one must conclude that the people that are pro-choice for schools are, in reality, out to kill education.

Which sounds pretty darn accurate seeing that the results of school choice, if the school stays open long enough to get any results, aren't all that great.
