Cognitive Choice '08: The Sick Leave Referendum

This is really a no-brainer. The municipal referendum calls for mandatory paid sick leave for all companies in the City of Milwaukee.

The benefits are immeasurable. It gives parents the opportunity to stay home if sick, to take care of a sick child, and for abused and battered women to get to a safe place. Without fear of also losing their jobs.

It will help the economy and it will help people stay healthier. Sick kids won't be as likely to go to school to infect other kids. Sick parents won't be going to work to infect coworkers and customers. All of this will boost production in the long run.

I am sure that there will be some that will abuse it. There always has been and always will be, but the method to correct that is still the same. Fire 'em.

Likewise, I agree with some critics of the referendum in that it should not be the City of Milwaukee issuing this referendum. It should be statewide. But you have to start someplace.

And as for the worn out argument of costing jobs, ruining the economy, etc. That is the same tired line that they have used for generations to protest child labor laws, the 40 hour work week, paid overtime, and all the other things that many of take for granted.

So vote yes on the municipal referendum.

And I predict that it will pass overwhelmingly.
