We all know that the republican party(with help from too many democrats) have been attacking the poor for quite some time.  Lately they have even ramped up those attacks! 

At a town hall in Welch, OK on Thursday, Rep. Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) called for the outright elimination of aid programs for low-income Americans, claiming that he has witnessed food stamp fraud firsthand. Mullin said he would like to “do away with a lot of these programs” because they allow people to slack off.
“The food programs are designed to take care of people who can’t work, not won’t work. And we all know those people that won’t work, right?” he asked the audience. “They’re abusing the program, and we’ve got to get them off of it.”
Mullin knows for a fact that food stamps are abused, because he saw them being used by people who did not fit his idea of what poor people are supposed to look like:

So I’m in Crystal City and I’m buying my groceries…and I noticed everybody was giving that card. They had these huge baskets, and I realized it was the first of the month. But then I’m looking over, and there’s a couple beside me. This guy was built like a brick house. I mean he had muscles all over him. He was in a little tank top and pair of shorts and really nice Nike shoes. And she was standing there, and she was all in shape and she looked like she had just come from a fitness program. She was in the spandex, and you know, they were both physically fit. And they go up in front of me and they pay with that card. Fraud. Absolute 100% all it is is fraud…it’s all over the place. And there you go, to the fact that we shouldn’t be supporting those who won’t work. They’re spending their money someplace.

Markwayne Mullin is the American dream!  He personally built a plumbing company into a successful business, and he didn't need no help!  

Shortly after Markwayne graduated from Stilwell High School, his dad fell ill and the family’s small plumbing company encountered financial troubles. Markwayne was only 20 years old but he and his wife, Christie, took over with only six employees. They had never run a business, but his dad had taught him the value of hard work and discipline.
Markwayne and Christie not only stabilized Mullin Plumbing, but grew it into one of the largest service companies in the tri-state area. Today, it is only one of several successful companies they own, including Mullin Farms, Mullin Properties and Mullin Services.
Mullin is proud to have turned a family trade into a thriving business. Mullin Plumbing is most recognized due to its advertising and the more than 100 employees known for their hallmark red vans visible servicing Oklahomans across the state. For his part, Markwayne personally promotes the company through television and radio advertising. One of his favorite jobs is to produce and host the radio call-in talk show “House Talk.”

Yes he is a true American because he built his business with his own two hands!**

**And $370,000 of taxpayer stimulus money!

 After winning his GOP House primary in 2012, Mullin remarked “government needs to have a limited role in our lives. We can take care of ourselves.”  Of course, it is easier to take care of yourself after the federal government cuts you a few checks totaling 370 grand

And the ending when asked about taking so much taxpayer money(which everyone can predict by now):

 Mullin declined to answer questions about the contracts.  His campaign released a statement in which Mullin criticized the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 as a “horrible waste of tax dollars” but defended his company’s acceptance of federal dollars.

I bet Mr. Mullin and paul ryan are very good friends!

The other day we brought you the story of how Paul Ryan (R- Ayn Rand) was begging for stimulus funds with one hand while voting against the stimulus on the other. Now we find out that not only was he two faced about it, he had no problem lying to people who asked him about it! H/T more great reporting from the Boston Globe:

On October 28, 2010, after the Wisconsin Republican penned at least five letters to two federal departments seeking grants under the Obama administration’s economic recovery package, Ryan responded to a caller on WBZ’s Nightside with Dan Rea who asked if he sought any of the money. Ryan said that he would not vote against something “then write to the government to ask them to send us money.”

“I did not request any stimulus money,” he continued.

Don't they vet these people???

In 2009, as Rep. Paul D. Ryan was railing against President Obama’s $787 billion stimulus package as a “wasteful spending spree,” he wrote at least four letters to Obama’s secretary of energy asking that millions of dollars from the program be granted to a pair of Wisconsin conservation groups, according to documents obtained by the Globe.

 The documents show that Ryan’s attempts to take advantage of the stimulus funds even after he voted against them was more expansive than previously reported. Ryan was criticized by some House Democrats in 2010 after the Wall Street Journal reported that he was among several Republicans lawmakers who sought the stimulus money for their constituents by, in his case, writing a letter in 2010 to the Department of Labor.

 The additional letters include his praise for the energy program’s aims, and clash with his own budget priorities, which call for curtailing many of the same Department of Energy investments that are designed to spur the growth of green technologies and reduce reliance on fossil fuels..

How so very fiscally conservative of him..... How so very " tea party" of him.  yet as we like to say here @ Cog Dis...but wait there is more.   It turns out that Paul Ryan (R- Wall St.) has more in common with Harvey Dent than one would think! 

This trillion dollar spending bill misses the mark on all counts,” said Ryan in a statement from his office. “This is not a crisis we can spend and borrow our way out of – that is how we got here in the first place.”   Heads! 

 It turns out that one of the biggest "spending interests" out there is Paul Ryan.

 But the biggest payoff came for the Wisconsin Energy Conservation Corporation. Ryan predicted the $20 million grant would be able to “create or retain approximately 7,600 new jobs over the three-year grant period and the subsequent three years.” Tails

 “All this temporary booster shot stimulus didn’t work in the stimulus package, didn’t work when the last administration tried these things, so we don’t want to go with ideas that have proven to fail, we want ideas that have proven to succeed,” he said in an interview on MSNBC in September 2011. “I think tax reform is the key.”  Heads

 “I was pleased that the primary objectives of their project will allow residents and businesess in the partner cities to reduce their energy costs, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and stimulate the local economy by creating new jobs,” Ryan wrote to Energy Secretary Steven Chu on December 18, 2009, on behalf of the Wisconsin Energy Conservation Corporation.  Tails

Paul ryan's voting record is no where near fiscally conservative.   Other departures from small-government orthodoxy by Ryan include his support of President George W. Bush’s Medicare prescription drug program, the TARP bailout of Wall Street, and the auto bailout.   Tails! 

The Return Of Weasel Speak

A couple of years ago, when Scott Walker was running for governor, he got an editorial about why he was against the stimulus funding put in the Wall Street Journal.  As is my wont, I wrote a dissertation on why Walker was full of it.

Now that Walker is unofficially preparing to run for the 2016 race for President of the United States, he now got another misleading piece, this time attacking the Affordable Care Act, into the Washington Post.

But instead of writing another dissertation on why he's again lying, I'll just link to the press release from Robert Craig of Citizens Action of Wisconsin, who did the yeoman's work on it.

Walker Does What He Says Doesn't Work To Solve A Problem He Denies Exists

Wait! What?!

Gov. Scott Walker today requested two federal agricultural disaster declarations for Wisconsin to help farmers that sustained losses this spring and summer as a result of extreme weather conditions that impacted fruit trees and the maple syrup collection.

"Agriculture is the backbone of Wisconsin's economy and many farmers are hurting as a result of unseasonable weather over the last year," Walker said. "The hot conditions in March followed by a cold, wet April damaged many crops including Door County cherries and northern Wisconsin's maple syrup harvest."

Walker requested the Secretary Disaster Declarations from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The first request is for the entire state for the anticipated fruit tree losses. The extreme weather this spring impacted Wisconsin's fruit trees including apples and cherries. Unseasonably warm temperatures in March caused many trees and vines to flower early, but frost conditions in April killed many fruit buds. Agriculture officials estimate statewide losses could potentially be as high as 80 percent.

In addition, state agriculture officials report that the maple syrup losses were greater than 30 percent this spring as a result of the early warm weather in March followed by a cold April. The counties listed in the request for maple syrup losses are Barron, Door, Florence, Forest, Kewaunee, Langlade, Lincoln, Marathon, Marinette, Pierce, Polk, St Croix, Shawano and Vilas.
Walker made the requests based on information provided by the State Emergency Board. The requests, if successful, could help Wisconsin farmers qualify for federal assistance.

Scott Walker, who says that government isn't the solution, and tried to refuse stimulus funds as Milwaukee County Executive, is now asking the federal government for help. He's asking for help from he feds because of the effects of global climate change, which he denies even exists.

And the corporate media and squawk radio listeners keep eating this slop up without even once recognizing the hypocrisy of it all.

The right has their undies in a bundle about it, but to be perfectly honest, I don't see what the big deal is. The commercial shows various footage clips of things going bad, and then getting better. They end the ad with a simple thank you. How in the world is that offensive? Here's the ad:

How To Fix The HSR Stand Off - Give Walker New Clothes

Unless you've been living under a rock for the past few weeks, you are already aware of the corner Scott Walker, Goobernator-elect, has painted himself into regarding high speed rail.

On one hand, if Walker turns down the federal stimulus money aimed to build the first part of what will become an nationwide rail line, he is throwing away hundreds if not thousands of desperately needed jobs not to mention costing us $135 million on top of the lost funding.

On the other hand, if Walker accepts the funding, and the train, he estranges his base which would not fit in well with his plans to seek the presidency.

But there is a solution to this issue in which the high speed rail and the jobs that go with it comes to Wisconsin and Walker still gets to save face. The problem is it would require a concerted effort by the state legislature which is much akin to herding cats.

The solution is to take a page from the playbook of the Milwaukee County Board.

In the spring of 2009, when Walker was making similar grandstanding posturing regarding the ARRA funds, saying he was going to refuse the bulk of the money that the county was eligible for, the Board stepped up and exposed the county executive's new clothes for what they were:

What was no surprise to anyone is that he County Board overwhelmingly overrode Walker's veto of the resolution allowing the County to aggressively pursue stimulus money. What was interesting is the level of emotions that more and more members of the Board is starting to show as they tire of Walker's showboating and his willingness to sacrifice the county for his campaign.

Even more moderate Supervisors like Lynne DeBruin and Pat Jursik are showing signs of disgust with Walker's shenanigans:

Walker's criteria for taking federal stimulus aid that the board shot down was politically motivated and "totally bogus," said Supervisor Lynne De Bruin. Supervisor Gerry Broderick said Walker's stance on stimulus aid was "great theater or dress rehearsal aimed at the governor's race in 2010."

De Bruin said Walker began backing away from his refusal to even consider stimulus aid after Milwaukee business leaders publicly disagreed with him. She called the standoff between the board and Walker the most upsetting issue of her 17-year career as a supervisor.

Supervisor Patricia Jursik criticized Walker for insisting on rejecting federal aid that required a local match. Walker said his ban on funding that required a local match wasn't absolute.

I'll spare both the gentle reader and myself to point out all of the ongoing hypocrisies from Walker as he tried to spin himself out of the corner he has put himself in. That is something I think I have covered in overly abundant amounts, even though it is still true.

I had further reported how Supervisor Weishan had instructed Corporation Counsel to be prepared to take the matter to court if Walker tried to balk on the newly implemented county policy.

The question, as I pointed out earlier, is whether the state legislature will have the fortitude to listen to the people now, and to do the right thing by making it law to allow the trains to roll through our fair state. It would be a fight to be sure.

There are many weak-kneed members in our state government that are afraid to take any kind of position on almost any topic. Add to this a list of the usual suspects that care more about protecting their wealthy friends than actually helping the state and its citizens and the job to bring these jobs to Wisconsin to be quite an uphill battle.

Fortunately, Milwaukee County is sending Elizabeth Coggs and Chris Larson to the legislature, and they have years of experience fighting with Walker and running circles around him.

Now they have to teach their soon-to-be colleagues, not only how to do this, but how to screw up enough courage to do what is necessary and in our best interest. They have the play outlined already. Now they only need to execute it.

RoJo Was For Stimulus Before He Was Against It

What is this, the tenth, eleventh time that they've found Ron Johnson preaching what he ain't practicing?

He's like the preacher who preaches against the vices of life just after he picks up his poker winnings, slams a shot whiskey, tokes a joint, and swats a prostitute on his way out of a gay brothel.

Simple. It's because he didn't get any of it.

Walker Takes Credit For Project He Opposed

Today, they had a ground breaking ceremony for Veteran's Manor, which will be an apartment building for low income veterans.

Scott Walker was there. From what I've heard, he gave a nice speech about how we should do whatever we can for our veterans and was the recipient of many thanks and kudos for getting the building built.

There is a problem with this.

Walker opposed the project because it used stimulus dollars. In fact, if the County Board hadn't pressed the issue and took over the stimulus application process, these apartments would probably never exist and that corner would remain a brownfield for years and years to come.

If anyone should be receiving praise for these apartments, it should be Supervisor Theo Lipscomb and his colleagues on the stimulus task force which he headed. It was this task force that attained the stimulus dollars which made this project happen.

Instead of receiving accolades, Walker should have been offering apologies.

But that would require a certain level of integrity which Walker has yet to exhibit.

Rolling Blunder Comes Back Home

Scott Walker ends his annual five-day campaign bike ride today. Normally, Walker holds it in June, but after several years, he thought June is just too darn warm to go on a motorcycle ride. I wonder how many true Harley riders are still laughing at that blatant lie.

The truth is he moved his bike ride to May not to promote tourism in Milwaukee, but to promote himself during the week leading up to the WISGOP convention, which is being held in Milwaukee this year. It is at this convention that he is expected to received the official coronation of the Republican machine, for all the good that will do him, considering how the electorate is veering sharply away from establishment candidates like Walker.

Whether you believe Walker's cover story of promoting tourism or the truth that he was promoting himself, it sure wasn't too successful. I have yet to come across one article or news story saying, "Wow, you should go visit Milwaukee!" The few articles that do mention Walker's bike ride are focused on the gubernatorial race, and Walker's many blunders along the way, including his performance of the Arizona Two-Step.

During his tax payer-funded campaign jaunt, several of my esteemed colleagues have pointed out the many benefits that the stimulus package delivered to the places he stopped at. Of course, one can't help but remember how Walker took to the national stage to come out against the stimulus package, before he was for it, before he was against it again, before he was for it again, before he was against it again and so on and so forth.

Check out Zach Wisniewski's site, Blogging Blue, which gave not just one, but two days worth of stimulus benefits. Also throwing in their contributions are Jim Arndt and Cory Liebmann.

But now Walker is leading his band of not-so-merry bikers and county staff back home to Milwaukee County, I would like to add my contribution to the stimulus list.

Perhaps Walker could take a bike ride around with some of the GOP delegates and show them things like the construction going on at 35th and Wisconsin, where construction crews are already hard at work building an apartment building for homeless veterans. Of course, since Walker said that the stimulus won't benefit "real people", he'll have to explain why he thinks that the men and women who bravely served our country aren't "real people."

Or maybe he can lead the group to Oklahoma Avenue or Sherman Boulevard or any of the other roads that are receiving long overdue repairs thanks to the stimulus money. It shouldn't be hard for even Walker to figure out, since they have the big signs acknowledging ARRA funds for making the repairs, and the jobs, possible.

He could take them out to the site of the old Tower Automotive plant and tell his friends how stimulus dollars are going to be used to clean up that site and make room for a job-producing company. Oh wait, that was Tom Barrett that is bringing jobs to the area. Never mind that one.

He could take them to Mitchell International Airport and tell them about the millions of dollars of stimulus funds being invested into the airport.

Or maybe he can take the group to MCTS and tell them about the 45 new buses Milwaukee County will be getting, thanks to the ARRA funds.

He could take them to the courthouse (don't forget your hardhats!) and tell them about his Milwaukee Works plan which uses stimulus funds to produce jobs. While he's at it, he could also tell his fiscally conservative buds how the stimulus funds allowed him to pile on three years of spending into one.

In fact, the benefits from the stimulus that Walker and Milwaukee County are enjoying, even though he changes his position on it more than he changes socks, are so numerous that he really should consult with the report written by his chief money cruncher, Steve Kreklow, to find most of the areas in Milwaukee County. Although to be accurate, that list is incomplete, since it does not include the extra $6 million that the County Board was able to bring in that Walker wasn't going to bother with.

It's just a shame that Milwaukee County couldn't get stimulus funds to help with the nearly $300 million in repairs needed to the parks, to repair the rest of the infrastructure, build a new mental health complex (with a competent director this time, please) or cover any of the other problems Walker has given us over the years.

Now I Can Get The Castle Wired, I Hope

Gov. Jim Doyle and U.S. Deputy Commerce Secretary Dennis Hightower today announced that Wisconsin will invest $28.7 million to expand broadband Internet access throughout rural parts of the state.

The state will receive $22.9 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (federal stimulus) funds to help provide high-speed Internet access to 467 sites in more than 380 communities in all the state’s 72 counties.

“High-speed Internet access is critical to the success of our state’s entrepreneurs, businesses, students and families,” Doyle said. “This project will create jobs to lay and install fiber cable, for telecommunications contractors and technicians, and in fields like construction, manufacturing, masonry and electrical wiring. Through the Recovery Act, the Obama administration is making major investments in Wisconsin’s broadband infrastructure to help our schools and libraries access high-speed Internet.”

Wisconsin is receiving one of several national Recovery Act grants for broadband development. The state’s project will expand broadband Internet access to 74 schools, eight post-secondary schools including two tribal colleges, and 385 libraries. Eighty-four percent of the school districts and colleges receiving the grant are in rural areas.

More than 200 miles of fiber optic cable will be installed, and more than $10 million will be spent on American-made telecommunications equipment and materials.

Of course, Scott Walker will be complaining about this too. In his eyes, students and rural people aren't real people either. Of course, the real reason he hates it is because then I'd have the castle wired and he'd never catch a break.

Walker: He Said, He Said

Scott Walker tweeted this this morning:

Well, to be perfectly honest, he flip flops on the stimulus so much that he said that it helped and it didn't many times over. But I do recall that he touted using stimulus dollars in his so-called "Milwaukee Works" project in his 2010 Budget Address from last September:

Milwaukee County Works, in the Executive Office of Business Development, will partner with existing employers and new businesses to foster economic development and job growth.

In an effort to jumpstart our local economy, this budget accelerates the county building program by beginning $395 million for projects to be started by the end of 2010.

The plan includes $38.6 million to rebuild highways, bridges and roads; $142 million in Airport improvements; over $38 million for park improvements and over $25 million for county facility upgrades.

John Goetter, the Vice President of Graef USA, is here today. His firm did the engineering work on the David F. Schulz Aquatic Center we opened this summer.

Accelerating three years worth of construction work into the next 16 months will help folks like John put more people to work within Milwaukee County.

In fact, over 1,000 jobs will be created in order to complete the more than 100 projects funded for 2010 in the accelerated capital plan I am proposing today. In addition, we will save up to $3 million in interest expenses by utilizing the Build America bonds.

Does Walker have no sense of ethics at all? I realized that he has come so far in his career as a lifelong politician with his hypocrisy, but to be bald face lying like this. Sheesh.

Who Will Get Wisconsin Back On Its Feet?

Some good news for Milwaukee! Mayor Tom Barrett and Governor Jim Doyle announced additional state funding to go with the stimulus dollars to clean up the old Tower Automotive site:

The state of Wisconsin has issued an $800,000 grant to the city of Milwaukee to help pay for the cleanup of the former Tower Automotive site in Milwaukee in preparation for redevelopment.

Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle and Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett announced the Blight Elimination and Brownfield Redevelopment grant from the state Department of Commerce Friday.

Renewal of the industrial site is expected to attract new development that could potentially create 700 to 1,000 new jobs.

"State investment in this project will help to transform a highly distressed property into an economic engine and symbol of hope," Barrett said in a press release.

Who could possibly argue with cleaning up and redeveloping a brownfield, while creating up to 1,000 new jobs at the same time?

Team Walker, that's who.

They apparently like the guy who can't make up his mind about stimulus dollars, was so bad at job creation that he had the Private Industry Council taken away from him, and thought a good way to create economic development was to abolish the whole thing, but only after his campaign staffers proved to be incompetent.

Could the choice be any easier?

Well, This Should Make The Right Happy (Or Maybe Not)

Businesses getting tax breaks using stimulus money:

The Wisconsin recipients of the tax credits are:

• Waukesha Electric Systems Inc. is receiving a $12.45 million tax credit to expand its plant in Waukesha to product large, high-voltage power transformers. The company anticipates that more than 80 percent of them will be used to help bring renewable energy to distant load centers or to replace aging, less efficient transformers.
• Caledonia-based CalStar Products is receiving a $2,443,547 tax credit to manufacture bricks and pavers from coal power plant fly ash. The process uses 88 percent less energy than traditional fired clay products, while avoiding the carbon dioxide emission associated with concrete, and makes beneficial use of fly ash.
• Ann Arbor, Mich.-based Kaydon Corp. is receiving a $1,774,800 tax credit to re-equip and expand its manufacturing facility in Milwaukee to produce pitch and yaw bearings used in the production and assembly of wind energy turbines.
• Milwaukee-based Ingeteam Inc. is receiving a $1,665,299 tax credit to manufacture wind turbine generators in various technologies. The company will also manufacture power converter and control systems for the wind and solar industries.
• Wausaukee Composites Inc. is receiving a $930,810 tax credit to manufacture fiberglass wind turbine components.
• Kaukauna-based Bassett Inc. is receiving an $868,500 tax credit to manufacture wind turbine towers and foundation components for all sizes of turbines and a $75,000 tax credit to manufacture carbon capture and sequestration systems to extract and trap carbon from waste systems from coal fired power plants.
• Waukesha-based Cooper Power Systems LLC is receiving an $846,180 tax credit for its new facility that will be producing high efficiency transformers.

The right should be happy, since all they've whined about (OK, not all) is that the stimulus isn't going to businesses. Now it is. If unemployment isn't wiped out and all products become dirt cheap to buy, that means the right wing was wrong and then we can get back to fixing their mess.

The Right Wing Secret Strategy: Ignore Reality

From one of the most caustic of the right wingers, Peter DiGaudio, griping about paying for the services he receives, comes this:

That’s exactly why Scott Walker refused porkulus money for Milwaukee County earlier this year. There is no such thing as a temporary government program. It exists in perpetuity.

Had Walker taken that money, the County Board and bureaucracy would have been used for start-ups like KRM or light rail that the taxpayer would have been stuck with paying for when the “free” money from Uncle Sam Barack ran out.

There is no such thing as free money from the federal government. It comes with strings attached as well as an obligation for local taxpayers to continue to pay for whatever it wrought once the “free” federal money runs out.

I needn't remind the gentle reader, but after Walker got done flip-flopping like a fish out of water on the whole stimulus issue, finally embraced it with both arms.

How does one argue with such a disturbed mind, that they are so effectively able to ignore reality?

Milwaukee County Supervisor John Weishan has a piece posted by BizTimes.com which highlights Scott Walker's hypocrisy on the use of stimulus dollars.

I'll be damned but if that doesn't sound familiar. Now where did I see that before?

How Stimulating! Walker Throws Sykes, Self Under The Stimulus Bus

For the umpteenth million time, Scott Walker has reversed himself on the stimulus funding in a piece he (or more likely, one of his interns) wrote for BizTimes.com.

This time, Walker is bragging about using the stimulus funding that he has flip-flopped on so many times, in order to create jobs and to fix some of the great damage his years of negligence has caused to Milwaukee County's infrastructure.

Unfortunately, Walker forgot to thank the County Board who had the fortitude to override Walker's political grandstanding and myopia and pass a resolution that allowed the County to pursue all the stimulus dollars it was eligible for, whether Walker liked it or not. They also kindly pointed out that you just did not and still do not have the authority to put any conditions on whether the stimulus dollars could be pursued.

Thank goodness they were smart enough not to listen to you then.

Then again, weasel speak is nothing new for you.

But the sweetest part of Walker's editorial was not that he again highlights his hypocrisy by once again flip-flopping on the stimulus.

The best part is just the simple fact that in the BizTimes.com piece, he is bragging about how the stimulus dollars will be creating jobs. He must not have realized that this throws his two biggest supporters under the bus, both of whom have been adamant that the stimulus would create no new jobs.

Those two supporters with bus tracks on them are Charlie Sykes and Scott Walker himself.
