The Walker Agenda Is Still Working! Part CCXXIX

As I have repeatedly pointed out, when Scott Walker signed off on Act 10, he took billions of dollars out the state's economy either by slashing the take home pay of public sector workers if not causing them to be laid off.  This had a ripple effect on the private sector as the public sector workers were forced to cut back on their spending.

This ripple effect was seen in businesses cutting their workers' pay if not laying them off altogether.  Sometimes the businesses had to close, causing mass lay offs.  If the laid off workers were lucky enough to find a job, it was for much less money than they were making before.

Walker apologists would dismiss my arguments out of hand and blame the loss for other reasons if not deny it altogether.

Sadly, the proof is in the pudding, and what a sour pudding it is:

New federal data shows consumer spending in Wisconsin grew slower than the national average and slower than personal income from 2011 to 2012.

The U.S. Department of Commerce released its first state-by-state breakdown of consumer spending on Thursday. It shows a 3% increase in Wisconsin from 2011 to 2012. The biggest jump was in spending for motor vehicles and parts. That grew 6%.

Nationally, consumer spending grew an average of 4.1% from 2011 to 2012.

But income gains in Wisconsin have been slower as well. Nationally, personal income increased 4.2% from 2011 to 2012. In Wisconsin, it grew only 3.9%. Real personal income, which takes inflation into account, grew even slower.

Keep in mind that these pitiful numbers are from only Walker's first year in office. I have no doubts that the following years will show that these numbers have only gotten worse, meaning that people are making even less and subsequently spending even less.

No, Walker's agenda is most definitely not working.  He needs to be removed from office with all due haste and real change needs to happen before we can even hope that things get better.

Government Shut Down Could Prove To Be Expensive

Remember how Representative Paul Ryan (R-Greedville) and our dumb Senator Ron Johnson (R-Dumbville) cheered on the government shut down last year as a way to save taxpayers a whole lot of
money?

It appears now that it worked as well as when then Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker furloughed thousands of county workers to save money.  That only cost taxpayers $6 million.

Ryan's and Johnson's stunt will cost a lot more now that a federal judge ruled it to be in violation of the Fair Labor Standards Act, based on this story by Doug Cunningham of Workers Independent News:

Now that federal judge has ruled the government violated its own Fair Labor Standards Act by not paying workers on time during the federal government shutdown, the government has until September 2nd to respond. The law provides for damages to be paid these workers. The case – Martin et al. v. The United States Of America – could win damages for as many as 1.3 million government workers impacted by the shutdown.

So we will get to pay all those workers for the time the pay they missed and not get the services they were supposed to provide.

Is there any question as to why we need Rob Zerban to represent the state and make sure that the taxpayers are protected by the very expensive political stunts of Paul Ryan?

2014 Summer Primary Election: Feast or Famine Edition

As the gentle reader, being the wonderfully informed individual that he or she is, knows that Tuesday, August 12, is the Primary Election Day in Wisconsin.  This is the first step in trying to make things better for our poor, beleaguered state.

Needless to say, Scott Walker, Becky Kleefisch and the other Teapublicans have made a mess of everything they've touched from their horrendously poor job creation numbers to higher taxes to lower services to corruption everywhere one looks to destroying the environment to attacking the rights of women, workers voters and minorities.

The lot of them needs to go and the sooner, the better.

Without further ado, here are my recommendations for Tuesday's election.  Please note that I will be skipping many of the races because the Democrats have only one candidate.  Sadly, in over 20 races - including my own Assembly District - they don't even have that many.

Governor

Recommendation: None

Let's face it, for better or for worse, the Democrats chose long ago that Mary Burke would be their candidate.  While her positions are a lot better than Walker's in many areas, there are other areas where she causes me to be very concerned.  While she is going to win the primary with ease, I just can't recommend her at this time.

She is facing Brett Hulsey, whose antics and personal foibles removed him from being a serious consideration even before he announced.

Lt. Governor

Recommendation: None

There are two candidates in this primary as well.  The candidates are John Lehman and Mary Jo Walters.  As with the governor's race, Lehman is the party's chosen candidate and will win hands down.  That said, I have seen almost nothing from either candidate that would allow me to make an informed recommendation.

Attorney General

Recommendation: Susan Happ

This is one of the few races where the voters have the luxury of a panel of good candidates: Jon Richards, Susan Happ and Ismael Ozanne.  All are good people and would do a good job for the people of Wisconsin.

That said, Richards, who has been running a very aggressive, polished and positive campaign has the shortcoming of lack of experience as a prosecuting attorney.  Ozanne, who is the Dane County District Attorney, would be a lightning rod for the Republicans due to his standing up for justice in the Act 10 case among other matters.  That leaves Happ, who is the Jefferson County District Attorney, has the experience and little for the Republicans to attack her on.  This will leave them to try to run on their candidate's track record, which is really rather poor.

State Treasurer

Recommendation: David Leeper

US House of Representatives

District 1

Recommendation: Rob Zerban

Rob Zerban is the only candidate in this primary that has been in Wisconsin, fighting for the people.  He has consistently shown himself to be a friend of workers and small business owners, both of which are vital to any recovery from Walkernomics.

District 2

Recommendation: Mark Pocan

District 4

Recommendation: Gwen Moore

I mean, ex-con Gary George? Really?

District 5

Recommendation: Chris Rockwood

District 6

Recommendation: Mark Harris

District 7

Recommendation: Kelly Westlund

Watch out for the fake Democrat running against her! He's really a Teapublican!

State Senate

District 15

Recommendation:  Janis Ringhand

District 17

Recommendation: Ernie Wittwer

District 21

Recommendation: Randy Bryce

State Assembly

District 8

Recommendation: JoCasta Zamarippa

District 10

Recommendation: David Bowen.

Bowen is the only clear progressive in this race.  He has stood up for the poor and the working class.

Bria Grant is the school choice candidate and Tia Torhorst is part of the Abele Party, and is pro-poverty and anti-democracy.

District 19

Recommendation: Marina Dimitrijevic

Dimitrijevic is the only candidate with a proven track record and has a well rounded list of endorsements from local civic and political leaders as well  as many unions.

That said, two of her opponents, Jonathan Brostoff and Sara Geenen, would also be wonderful representatives.  The fourth candidate, Dan Adams, is just a joke that Chris Abele ran out of spite for Dimitrijevic and Brostoff.

District 78

Recommendation: Lisa Subeck

District 81

Recommendation: Margo Miller

Milwaukee County

Sheriff

Recommendation: Chris Moews

Dan Adams Just Doesn't Want To Win

A week ago, I reported that Dan Adams, Boss Abele's hand-picked candidate for Assembly District 19 had given up on trying to win the election and took on a spoiler role.  To help him do that, Boss Abele and his friends in the Greater Milwaukee Committee had their badly misnamed front group, Forward Milwaukee County, send out an amateurish flier attacking both Marina Dimitrijevic and Jonathan Brostoff.

This past weekend, the Abele struck again with another sophomoric flier.  This time, it portrayed Dimitrijevic

and Brostoff as two thirds of the "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil" monkeys.

It was enough to finally get the attention of the local corporate media, who did their usual spin of false equivalency to minimize the way these stunts make Abele and Adams come off as the buffoons they really are.

But that wasn't apparently enough for Adams.  When the paper contacted him, he actually had the nerve to say this:

The Milwaukee Police Association, a labor group, endorsed Adams, who has spoken out against unions. Abele endorsed him and gave him $500, the maximum you can give to an Assembly candidate.

"Time after time, Big Labor creates their own circular firing squad," Adams said. "With these large shadow money expenditures for Geenen and Dimitrijevic, the union bosses are showing their feeling of entitlement to purchasing the 19th District."

Alrighty then!

Again, I must point out that Abele has done much more than given Adams $500. Boss Abele has held at least four fundraisers for Adams. Boss Abele has also shared office space and staff.

If there is a candidate that is being propped up by special interests looking to buy this election, that person would be Adams.

Heck, Adams has even told people that Abele wanted him to run for the sole purpose of expanding his "sphere of influence."

What is as equally eye-popping is just how out of touch the Abele/Adams campaign is with that district.  AD 19 is one of the most progressive districts in the state.  They are not going to support a candidate that is nothing more than a moderate Republican working at the whim of a power-hungry plutocrat.

My Endorsements for Tuesday August 12th!

For What Its Worth, Here are some of my endorsements:

Governor -

I do not endorse, but I voted for Bret Hulsey as a protest vote to let the powers that be know that how they have handled this race is wrong, damaging in the short term and destructive in the long term.  Do I want Scott Walker to win again?  Absolutely not!   Do I think Brett Hulsey would be a better Governor than Scott Walker -  By leaps and bounds yes!

Lieutenant Governor- 

I do endorse Mary Jo Walters!!   I think the work she has done gathering signatures, engaging people and talking actual issues should be rewarded.  I appreciate what John Lehman has done in the past but his time has past.  When he ducked a debate he showed me his time has come and gone.  

The 63rd Assembly district - 

Bryn Biemeck -  Anytime you have a chance to knock Robin Vos from an elected position you need to take it.   Redistricting has made it almost impossible in many seats for the opposing party to make a difference.   With no real Democratic race on the ballot(I dont care who wins the AG, they are all head and shoulders better than JBVH or the his little twin replacement), now is your chance to show up on Tuesday and make a huge difference in the state of WI politics.

 In an off year primary, you can make a difference here!!

Senate District 21 -

Jonathan Steitz -  Triple dipper and former senate loser, Van Wanggaard, was being rewarded by the republican party for turning on the union he belonged to his whole career by having a distrcit redrawn for him where he might be able to win.  Then extremist Steitz stepped in to run and Van was screwed.  He does not have the appeal to the moderates or the left and the far right is now behind Steitz who strong believes in secession.    As the above race, you can make a difference here and watch the crazy Jonathan Steitz win and then all of the sane people in the district can get behind Randy Bryce who is a much much better candidate than both of them combined.  

6th Congressional District:

Glenn Grothman.   Here is another race that l would love to see the local Democrats cross over and support Grothman.   Democratic candidate Mark Harris will win in November anyway, and I am a firm believer that the bigger stage that Glenn Grothman has the better it is for everyone on the left!  

Wisconsin 72nd Assembly district.   

Scott Krug has to go!  He really really has to go.  Dana Duncan is the one to send him packing and represent the 72nd Assembly District like it should be represented - intelligently!    First he has to win the Democratic primary against a long time party machine backed candidate.   Please help him get through the primary and lets go about beating Scott Krug.    

Senate District 17:

This is a race where every democratic vote will matter.   There is long time local resident Ernie Wittwer running against political insider Pat Bomhack.  Bohmack will be more of the same vanilla, center right,m kowtow to the republican candidate that we have way too much of in Madison, WI.   Wittwer is the one to keep the tradition of independent thought, well spoken and carefully considered positions that District 17 is used to.   I recommend  Wittwer!

Emerge Wisconsin Is Seeking A New Executive Director

My  friend, Wendy Strout, has chosen to move on from her job as Executive Director of Emerge Wisconsin.

As a result, Emerge Wisconsin is now looking for a new executive director.  The details regarding this can be found on their website.

I would like to thank Wendy for her years of service at Emerge and for training many of the wonderful women leaders this state is benefiting from.  I look forward to working with her again in her future endeavors.

Boss Abele Pulls Some (Purse)Strings For Torhorst

Apparently realizing that Dan Abele Adams is a lost cause, Boss Abele has decided to focus on trying to salvage the race for his other hand-picked candidate, Tia Torhorst.

Like Adams, Torhorst has been caught repeatedly misrepresenting herself to the voters and needed a boost.
So Boss Abele pulled some purse strings for his aide and got former US Senator Herb Kohl to give a generic endorsement for Torhorst.

At first, I was surprised at the endorsement.  Kohl is not one to often give endorsements and when he does, it's usually just for a big race, such as a statewide race or a federal race.

But it started to make sense when I realized that Abele and Kohl have a tight relationship because of the Milwaukee Bucks and the plutocratic dream of a new arena for the lackluster team.  Cementing the relationship even further is the fact that John Zapfel, who currently Abele's Deputy Chief of Staff, was a former legislative aide to Kohl.

There's a few strings for Abele to pull to get Kohl to say something nice about Torhorst.

The laugh line about this though is the reaction that Abele got when he gushed over the news on Facebook:

Notice the box with the names of the people that liked it.  Those are all either Abele's people, most of them his employees.  It's like Boss Abele is demanding the same kind of loyalty that Scott Walker requires from his people.

Fortunately, the good people of Assembly District 10 have a candidate that will represent them and not Abele.  Please make sure to get out the vote on Tuesday in support of David Bowen.

Is Dan Adams Really A Republican?

People have been asking Dan Abele Adams, the Abele Party candidate for Assembly District 19, is really a Democrat or if he is a Republican pretending he's a Democrat.  The confusion is understandable, considering that Adams has repeatedly come out for Republican issues such as school choice, anti-worker rights, anti-representative government and pro-privatization of public services.

Of course, Adams has been denying any relationship with the Republicans.

But then perhaps Adams might want to explain this letter:

For those that might not remember, Betty Jo Nelsen was the Republican Assemblywoman from the Shorewood area until Alberta Darling took the seat.  Nelsen was no do nothing Republican but also served as the Assembly Minority Leader for a number of years as well.

Likewise, Polly Beal is a former Republican Assemblywoman until she lost to the Democrat Sheldon Wasserman.

To paraphrase the old saw, if it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck and hangs around with other ducks, it's probably a duck.  

If Adams is wondering why people wonder if he is like David Clarke or Chris Abele - a Republican running as a Democrat - he might want to take a hard, honest look at himself.

Ironic Picture Of The Day

What makes this picture so ironic is that Chris "Boss" Abele was so incensed at the thought of health care workers in Milwaukee making a living wage that he tried to make it so that no health care workers in the entire state of Wisconsin would be guaranteed a living wage.

How sick is this boy king that he would pretend to support the working people when he was planning to keep his boot on their collective neck?

Burke Vs. Walker: A Charitable Comparison

As most people already know, I am less than enthused about the gubernatorial election this year.  I don't find Mary Burke, the Democrat's hand-picked candidate to be satisfactory and all too much like Scott Walker for my taste.  As examples on why I am not so excited is that the two biggest points of discussion thus far has been which candidate has out-outsourced the other and to which businesses would be better to give the taxpayers' money.

That said, there are distinctive differences between the two.  Burke stands for more freedoms for the people,
including supporting marriage equality, women's rights, voters' rights and collective bargaining.  As we all know, Walker is opposed to equality of any sort, denying rights to gays, women, minorities and workers in both the private and public sector.

Another area of great difference is simply their personalities, as displayed through their attitudes and actions towards others, especially those in need.

It is well known that Burke is a multimillionaire.  But unlike Chris "Boss" Abele, who uses his vast fortune to consolidate power in his hands and attempt to build an empire, Burke actually took her money and time to do good for the community:

After working in that position for nine years, she got very involved in her volunteer work and decided to leave Trek and devote all of her time to her philanthropic efforts, which have a special focus on education.

She’s on the board of directors of the Burke Family Foundation, which has awarded grants to the Urban Ecology Center, the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra, First Stage and other organizations that focus on underserved kids’ education and closing the achievement gap.

While working at Trek, she also became a volunteer tutor at the Boys & Girls Club of Dane County, then served as chair of its board of directors and led a $6.2 million fundraising effort for a new facility. She developed AVID/TOPS, a college-prep program for students who wouldn’t have been helped otherwise. The program is close to her heart. Its first class of 85 just graduated and 90% are enrolled in post-secondary education.

Burke said she often thinks of one student, Daniel, who wanted to stay in the program so badly after his family moved that he took multiple buses across town to get to school and his job and stay involved in sports and the AVID/TOPS program.

“It was his dream to go to college and he knew how much this program was helping him,” Burke said. “He entered Edgewood College this fall, realizing his dream. There are a lot of kids out there like Daniel who have a dream and we need to make sure that we are supporting them in that dream so that they do learn how to set that vision for themselves and take responsibility for making that happen.”

When it comes to Scott Walker, it's a completely different story.

The only charity that I could find that Walker was involved in - not counting his crony capitalism and just plain cronyism - was Operation Freedom.

As the gentle reader surely remembers, Operation Freedom was the supposed charity fund for veterans and gave his blessing to his long time friend and campaign worker, Tim Russell, to raid the fund for Walker's campaign website and Russell's own peccadilloes.
their families that Walker had set up as a thinly-veiled campaign stunt.  Not only was Walker using Operation Freedom as a campaign stunt, but he apparently also

I would be remiss if I also did not mention one other prime example of Walker's idea of giving.  That would be the infamous Black Friday email he sent out telling people not to bother giving their children Christmas presents.  Instead, he thought people should take the money they would have spent on the gifts and just go ahead and give it to him.

The acts of charity which has been done or not done by Burke and Walker aren't enough in itself to decide to vote for.  What they do show is which one is more of a decent human being and less likely to govern through malfeasance.

Clearly, Burke wins this comparison hands down.

The Walker Agenda Is Still Working! Part CCXXVIII

Scott Walker's agenda of taking money from the people and giving it to the 1% continues with its predictable lack of success:

A BMO Harris call center in Monona will close by Oct. 10, ending the jobs of 32 people, the Chicago bank has told the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development.

BMO Harris told employees in late February that it planned to combine call centers into two locations, in Brookfield and Buffalo Grove, Illinois, spokesman Jim Kappel said. He said nearly two-thirds of the workers at the office, 508 River Place, have found new jobs at BMO Harris or with other companies.

Kappel said the Monona office closing does not affect any bank branches and is not related to the layoff of 37 employees at the BMO Harris data center in Sun Prairie, a year and a half ago.

Do you think that this is why Walker is running so many attack ads on Mary Burke? He certainly can't run on his record.

We all know there is a sucker born every minute, and our current Governor has been nothing but a circus sideshow.

Republicans Encouraged To Do Crossover Vote For Clarke

Ever since he was appointed as Milwaukee County Sheriff by then Governor Scott McCallum, David Clarke has not had an opponent that presented as a serious threat to being reelected to office.

That has changed this year with Chris Moews running a solid campaign.  For months, one could not attend an event in Milwaukee County without running into Moews being there, working the crowd like a pro.

But as hard as Moews has been working to win this election, he has not had a bigger asset to his campaign as Clarke.  Clarke has been consistently been doing more damage to himself than Moews could have ever done.  Clarke has been embarrassing himself regularly with his immature temper tantrums, outlandish comments, ineffective law enforcement, scandals, and irresponsible stunts, like telling people that they shouldn't call 911 in an emergency.

Clarke's behaviors and failures have been so egregious that even some of his fellow conservatives are pulling away from supporting him.  Fortunately for Clarke - and unfortunately for the rest of us, he still has the NRA and its deep pockets supporting him.

But even with the dark money behind him, Clarke and his supporters know that he is in serious danger of losing.  And with that knowledge, they are getting desperate.

Besides sending out whackadoodle mailers to random households, his supporters are urging Republicans to cross over in the primary to vote for him.  The most notable of these attempts is a letter that was sent out by former Governor TOMMY!!! Thompson:

As with Clarke's mailers, Thompson's letter was apparently mailed to random homes.  These images of the letter are courtesy of State Senator Chris Larson.  I am quite sure that Senator Larson was already planning to vote in the Democratic primary.  I am also quite sure that he won't be voting for Clarke.

It is stunts like this that shows the importance of voting in each and every election.  Yes, it's "only" a primary. Yes, it's in the middle of August, when most people are squeezing in vacations and enjoying the warm weather while it lasts.  But it is the lackadaisical attitude towards voting that has allowed people like Scott Walker and David Clarke to stay in office as long as they have been.

Milwaukeeans need to make sure that they get themselves to the polls on Tuesday, August 12, to vote Clarke out once and for all.

Boss Abele

I have already written about Milwaukee County Emperor Chris Abele's plan to build up his Abele Party (motto: For a more perfect plutocracy), regardless whether they are Teapublican or Republicrat..

The Shepherd Express has more on this disgusting local display of the corruption in government we have come to see all too often since Citizens United:

The answer is very clear. Obviously, the county board is not completely innocent and longtime county board watchers assign fault at about 20% the board and 80% Abele. The source of the problem is not the county board, but the clumsy and aggressive actions of Abele. When you grow up with family money to enable you to buy whatever or whomever you needed, you didn’t have to learn to work with people, to compromise and to try to work toward consensus. Instead, you just stepped over or, more often, just stepped on anyone who disagreed with you.

Abele’s approach to governing is rather unique. In order to get his way, Abele goes around the county supervisors, who are elected by Milwaukee County voters, and who are supposed to be the check and balance against the county executive. Instead, he goes to the outstate conservative Republican legislators to override the will of Milwaukee County’s elected representatives. Abele garners support from outstate Republican legislators, many of whom are clearly and unabashedly hostile to Milwaukee. All of his “major changes” were put into effect, not by the democratic approach of working with the locally elected county supervisors as the system was designed to do and how it has worked since the current county system was created. Instead, he had his outstate conservative Republican legislator pals, who are not elected by and do not represent the Milwaukee County voters, override the wishes of the majority of Milwaukee County residents.

This pattern is exposing Abele to the obvious question, who does he represent and why does he claim to be a Democrat when his actions are those of a conservative Republican?

In response to those questions, Abele has recently been bragging to his friends that his new strategy is to create the Abele machine. He has personally recruited two individuals who, he brags, will be under his control, to run in the Milwaukee County Democratic state Assembly seats being vacated by state representatives Sandy Pasch and Jon Richards. His friends said that he even referred to himself as “Boss Abele” in the mold of the late Chicago Mayor Richard Daley. Abele’s plan is to use his money to try to buy the election for his two hand-selected individuals. So when he takes his issues to the Republican-controlled Legislature, he will have two votes from Democrats in Milwaukee County. That will enable him to claim he is not a hard-line Republican, but a bipartisan hero.

Unfortunately, Abele’s plan could work since money is important in elections. But money cannot buy votes or an election if the voters stay well informed. Keep an eye out for negative and false campaign literature and any ads attacking the candidates running against his chosen ones. One guess who is paying for these ads.

Abele definitely puts the buy into buy-partisanship. Is it any wonder why he has consistently tried to block the Move to Amend referendum from ever appearing on the ballot? Without his daddy's money to toss about, no one would want anything to do with him.

To help beat Boss Abele, make sure to vote for Marina Dimitrijevic in Assembly District 19 and David Bowen in Assembly District 10 on August 12th!

The Scott Jensen Legacy

I finally figured out why new Assembly rep Jessie Rodriguez does whatever formerly convicted felon Scott Jensen tells her to do:

1.  He was a convicted felon before blind to republican crime Brad Schimel, gave him a get out of jail free card.

2. She knows that if she does not do what he says, he will send his goons over to rough her up!

WIsconsin political aide pleads guilty to disorderly conduct chargeA state legislative aide accused of harassing a news cameraman at the capitol building in Madison, Wis., pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct on April 25.Steve Baas, communications director for Assembly Speaker Scott Jensen, was referred to a first offenders program for his actions inside the state Capitol on Jan. 30. Steve Cady, a cameraman for WBAY-TV in Green Bay, claimed Baas collared him by the necktie while he and a reporter attempted to interview another Jensen aide.Cady claimed Baas spun him around by his necktie and let go of him only when Cady shouted that he captured the incident on videotape. Baas said he tried to move Cady from blocking the hallway and claimed Cady tried to hit him during the confrontation. After the incident, Cady said the videotape exonerated him from Baas' claims.In accepting a plea agreement, the misdemeanor charge will be expunged from Baas' record after he completes the first offenders program. Baas will not have to serve jail time or pay a fine.Although she did not file a complaint, reporter Natalie Arnold said in an interview with The Green Bay News-Chronicle that other Jensen staff members "manhandled" her by shoving her against the wall in an attempt to prevent the interview.The scuffle occurred when Cady and Arnold went to the Capitol to question R. J. Pirlot, another aide to Speaker Jensen, about his involvement in a campaign against state Rep. Lee Meyerhofer (D-Kaukauna). WBAY News has been investigating allegations that Pirlot anonymously provided court transcripts to an independent campaign group. The group has been accused of producing a campaign radio spot that portrayed Meyerhofer as a "wife-beater." (City of Madison v. Baas)-

The question I have, is why in the world would anyone hire a thug like Steve Baas to represent them?  Especially the Milwaukee Chamber of Commerce, no wonder unemployment is so high in Milwaukee.

Edit Note:  Scandal Plagued Scott Jensen is the one person in the state of WI leading the voucher expansion.  Do you really think he has the best interest of your children in mind?  Is he someone you would want your children to look up to or role model?  We all know the answer to that!
