As Scott Walker is trying to get some attention in his presidential bid, he's laying out parts of his platform in the upcoming state budget. One of his agenda items is to allow just about anyone to teach:
Anyone with “real-life experience” and a bachelor’s degree would be able to get a teaching license in any subject as long as they pass a test proving they are knowledgeable, under a budget provision Gov. Scott Walker announced Thursday.Walker must figure that if we aren't going to have real schools, we don't need to have real teachers. Obviously, if the teachers aren't really teachers, the voucher school doesn't have to pay them as much and the voucher school owner can increase their profit margin.
The proposal would expand the non-traditional routes available to become licensed without an education degree. But many details weren’t disclosed Thursday, including whether it would call for any preparation for teaching, which is required in many of the current ways to get a teaching license without attending an education school.
Under Walker’s proposal, people with experience in fields they intend to teach could get licenses as long as they have a bachelor’s degree and demonstrate “that he or she is proficient in the subject or subjects that he or she intends to teach,” according to Walker spokeswoman Laurel Patrick.

Sounds like a great idea the Government should be removed from all Education, This is one smart Governor.
ReplyDeleteWell, in college flunky scott walker -- you certainly have your entire disconnect between education and government.
DeleteBut anyone that falsely brags about a masters degree because he has enraged thousands to take to the streets cannot be considered a "smart governor".
But with the take-down of wisconsin by economic terrorists that only answer to multinational corporations -- you have gotten y our wish -- the vast majority now in Wisconsin government are uneducated and merely pawns for out-of-state and multinational interests.
Somewhere there had to be a study about the success and retention rate of these people. I know there is personal testimony from Teach for America people who know this type of thing hurts children.
ReplyDeleteI always like to see the bright side of everything. Scott Walker, lacking the minimum qualifications of a Bachelor degree, would not be eligible to teach. Too bad that was not a requirement to become Governor.
ReplyDeleteStupid teachers think they are so much smarter than the rest of us, just because they went to college. Pfffft. All you need is common sense to teach. Heck, my wife who only graduated high school could teach any single class in high school.

That's quality satire right there! Well played.
DeleteBased on Walker's logic the life long experiences of criminals would make them great police candidates or lawyers. Drug sellers and abusers could become doctors and pharmacists. The mentally ill could become psychiatrists. The list is endless. This could be Walker's new job creation plan!!!!!
ReplyDeleteAnonymous at 8:50 am gives voice to precisely what is going on in WI and around the country. The 1980 Libertarian platform on which David Koch ran for VP of the US says, "Government ownership, operation, regulation, and subsidy of schools and colleges should be ended. We condemn compulsory education laws … and we call for the immediate repeal of such laws.” When your goal is the destruction of public education, what does it matter who's teaching? In fact, the lower the skill level, the faster the system failure, the sooner the Republicans' corporate masters get their greedy hands on the public trust.
ReplyDeleteGood catch! Anonymous @ 8:50 is obviously a Koch Brother! Catch him!
DeleteScott Walker (R), Governor of Iowa sells more snake oil in Wisconsin.
ReplyDeleteJust because Walker proposed the idea does not mean it is stupid, it just means it needs to be carefully scrutinized.
ReplyDeleteHaving an experienced professional teaching a technical class may be better than a certified teacher with little or no experience. The idea is not new nor original to the SKWalker It has been used in post secondary education for decades. Most probably these would be part time teachers for specific classes at the high school level. Except at bail out schools (voucher).
I imagine requirements will be not having signed a recall
petition nor membership a union with few exceptions, and making a WEDC approved campaign contribution.
