It used tax dollars to support the county staff and equipment that went along. Also, Milwaukee 7 and Visit Milwaukee helped pay for it. Both of those received tax payer money, so we could technically add money laundering to the list.
It is clear that in the earlier years of this annual ride county staff was very involved and taxpayers paid a big chunk of the bill. The corporate sponsorship gimmick began only after a lot of complaining about the earlier years, which clearly were on the taxpayer dime.
Speaking of Easy Rider in the cartoon. Dennis Hopper died today. Safe to say Scott Walker will never be mistaken for Dennis Hopper.
