Little Johnny AssaultRifle

By Jeff Simpson

At one point in our history, when we were building a nation, we had a folk tale, and songs sung of Johnny Appleseed:

With the help of Home Depot, we have a new folklore starting- Johnny Assaultrifle

On Saturday, May 31, over 150 open carry enthusiasts plan to convene at a Home Depot in the Fort Worth suburb of North Richland Hills, Texas.
The event has been billed by organizers Open Carry Tarrant County as “the largest open carry to date” in an area that has lately been a focal point for gun rights campaigners. Raffle prizes on offer include a black powder revolver and an AR 15 rifle.
Home Depot’s corporate communications director said the $80 billion (revenues) store chain has no plans to prevent the rally from taking place.

“Our feeling is that ultimately, the voters direct the laws on gun carry issues, so we defer to the prevailing ordinances in states and communities,” said Stephen Holmes. “Therefore, customers who are legally permitted to carry firearms are allowed to do so when entering our stores, provided the firearms are carried in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.”
If you were not able to strap your rifle on your back, grab your kids and attend one of these, allow us at CogDis to help bring you there:

  1. these are really kind of sick people.........why do they feel they need to carry machine guns around? Maybe they should join the military?

    1. The women in those pictures are slinging guns while carrying kids. Truly sick. It is one thing if war has broken out in America - but just to put people in danger just to prove that you can open carry is pathetic and sick. These people are a menace to society. I see pictures of open carry rallies - people have muzzles pointing at eachother, at their kids and their own heads! Idiots!! Who knows if these folks have their safety on. Last thing I want to see in a public place is a splattered teahadist head blown to pieces because they couldn't follow instructions to SAFELY carry a gun. Idiots!!!!

    2. Those aren't machine guns. Imbecile

    3. Anon @ 5:58 am. Look, I don't care what kind of gun it is - open carry is wrong. Further, that these women have to carry an AR 15 or a type of gun the military uses in
      combat and encourage kids to
think open carrying it is a right is
      so irresponsible, quite frankly I
question if they are fit parents.

And last...do not call me an imbicile. Your right to be a gun nut DOES NOT trump MY RIGHT to free speech.

  3. Not actually machine guns...calling them machine-guns is unhelpful to your cause and makes you sound stupid. Here's the Deal, at least in my opinion: guns are here to stay but idiots like these are serving more good than bad. The problem isn't guns per say, but idiots with guns and idiots who lose their guns because they are too stupid to keep them from being stolen. Open carry events are the worst sort of PR for the gunfags and make more responsible owners look stupid by association-that is why I say...more open carry events...hell, bring your evil black rifles to nursing home visits, funerals, red cross blood drives; the more inappropriate the better. The only really effective thing that can be done with the idiots among us is to apply strong social pressure. Gunfags need to stop allowing people to steal their guns and they need to stop accidentally or purposely shooting people. Fortunately, the open carry maroons are creating a situation in which more sensible gun people are being forced to speak out against such buffoonery. Sadly, thats all we have to work with. Attempting to ban weapons simply won't work and only threatens and pisses off the gunfags slog with the more responsible gun people with whom we might agree with on a lot of other issues. Once again...social pressure combined with better economic conditions are the only workable way to control the destruction caused by Americans with guns. Calling semi autos "machine-guns" and whining really won't accomplish much except to further divide us and reduce the effectiveness of social pressure which is now being applied from within the gun world against these sorts of dumbasses. Myself...I'm kinda into guns, but when I see someone open carrying I walk right up, admire their gun and then I gently tell 'em how stupid they look.

These gun owners don't even understand the words in the 2nd Amendment.

    3. My post was a rant...something wrong with that?

    4. Its entirely unreadable -- so what's your point?

      Delete
    5. it's actually not entirely unreadable. Also, your undies are a bit tight, me thinks...but let me help you.I'll speak slowly and enunciate this time:

One of my points is that nearly as bad as gun fags and their idiotic strategy, are the anti gun fags and their idiotic strategy. Just like Michele Bachman, the whiney ill informed and absolutists anti gun fag’s arguments are easily parried by anyone who can point out simple departure from fact. You think it's a machine gun. Michele Bachman thinks Ben Franklin was president. I have a hard time taking either of you seriously. See how that works?

(Insert the spaces we somehow do without at madison newspapers.com comment board)

I couple the above thought with the observation that just like cigarettes, booze and trans fat, the gun genie is out of the bottle. Harm reduction is the only game in town. Harm reduction is done through social pressure, civil forfeitures for people who act irresponsibly and social spending (mainly on propaganda : “Real men don’t forget to lock up their guns” “real men don’t shoot their wives’ kind of stuff) . Somewhere in there I think I did mention that equitable distribution of wealth takes away some of the impetuous for stupid macho posturing by gunfags but it wasn’t really my main point.

(insert space here that EE Cummings somehow did without )

In my somewhat educated opinion, trying to ban guns is a non starter and would do little to remove the millions of guns out there already-it does however create enemies out of people who might otherwise be pragmatic and sensible on other issues that are considered left or progressive. In fact...every time the gun fags imagine somet item is going to be banned, sales go up, the manufacturers ramp up production and the quantity of weapons and rounds of ammo horded increase exponentially. Because you are not very sophisticated, I’ll not confuse you further with the subject of digital printing technology and the home milling of untraceable 80% receivers

(Insert spaces McCarthy used sporadically at best)

My final point? The gunfags are doing great work making fools of themselves and making second amendment fundamentalism look as stupid as it is. Why liberals want to be the mirror image of that, I cannot say, but it is a poor strategy. Let the gunfags hang out at home Depo. Go there and laugh at them. laugh and point at the open carry midgets when you see them at the supermarket . Politicians manufacturers and gun swingers need to take responsibility for the stupid among them. It can't be acceptable to store weapons where they can be stolen and its uncivil to open carry in a civil society. It is also beyond pathetic to find one's sense of self worth and personal power within a society through the public brandishing or fetishization of weapons.

(insert more spaces that the greek playwrights and the writers of the bible knew nothing about)

Sadly, only ridicule will get that point across. On a hopeful note, many people who enjoy gun ownership and who used to be too timid to ridicule their own peers for ridiculous behaviors are more willing to do so. The occupation of Home Depo or Chilies by malcontents with cheap carbines hung from single point combat slings encourages that ridicule and tactically speaking, is about as smart as hippies blowing up the Army Math Research Center to end a war..

    6. Your use of "fags" makes you sound like an idiot and undermines every point you tried to make. You might as well go to a Home Depot with your Ruger 10/20 pointed at your wife to show you are a "real man."

    7. No, gunfag is perfect, while antigun fag is nearly as good. My favorite episode of South Park is the one where the SP gang and the gay lobby get together and officially change the meaning of "fag" from a derogatory term for homosexuals to the preferred nomenclature for people who ride loud Harely Davidsons, but that sort of irony is probably beyond you.

Your second comment is sort of a silly non sequitor, don't you think? I mean it really makes you look like an idiot.

    8. I understood what you were trying to say Sarge. I'm a gun owner and have my CCDW. I own assault rifles. But I don't care for these open carry play babies myself. They are amateurs and don't seem too bright. I think ultimately they are hurting the 2nd amendment not helping it. I think they are silly trolls. If this persists I don't know how I will be able to tell the difference from a real threat and one of these hillbillies. It actually heightens the danger. To be honest I think we may need one of these idiots to get themselves shot over this to bring a clear perspective to their' foolishness. Harsh.. I know and I am being a bit sarcastic. But it might take something seriously nasty to wake these fools up.

  4. As we see more and more pictures of these 'Open Carry Idiots' we should keep in mind how dangerous they really are. As with most things that are or could be dangerous, there are rules for gun safety. I have included the rules below, see how many or ALL of these rules the Open Carry Idiots are violating. Here are the rules:

    1. Always Keep The Muzzle Pointed In A Safe Direction

    2. Firearms Should Be Unloaded When Not Actually In Use

    3. Don't Rely On Your Gun's "Safety"

    4. Be Sure Of Your Target And What's Beyond It

    5. Use Correct Ammunition

    6. If Your Gun Fails To Fire When The Trigger Is Pulled, Handle With Care!

    7. Always Wear Eye And Ear Protection When Shooting

    8. Be Sure The Barrel Is Clear Of Obstructions Before Shooting

    9. Don't Alter Or Modify Your Gun, And Have Guns Serviced Regularly

    10. Learn The Mechanical And Handling Characteristics Of The Firearm You Are Using

  5. The fact that open carry advocates sling guns over 1 hip with a baby on the other makes me sick. This is getting out of control. It isn't the wild west. This has gone to the point where their rights trump mine. I don't want to be surrounded by people carrying guns. I don't want them shopping where I shop or living on my street. I don't want them educating their kids that they have a right to whip out a gun when junior feels threatened. America is becoming the land of rednecks.

    1. it's out of control for sure, and it's been hugely counterproductive for the gunfags. Not only do they illustrate to the rest of the world (potential foreign investors?) that the USA is becoming a redneck Mogadishu, it jooks dumb to normal folks here at home. Idiots like these might thrive on looking tough or scary but it's hard to invest a lot of time in activities that exposes you to ridicule from to the rest of the country. Bonus that It is drawing criticism from the less crazy "gun suckers" but deliciousy, not from big Wayne Lapierre who officially jumped the shark a decade ago.

Best of all, Home Despot can only lose by approving of armed morons hanging around the tile and flooring deptartment-now they look stupid by association. The only thing that could be more ironic would be a situation where Home Despot decides to ban open carry of scary carbines in their stores due to public pressure...and then even more armed gunfags with babies show up.

Holy self parodying circle jerk, Batman.

    2. My quote from Goodfellas has two meanings. First, if you are armed, there is a good chance you will shoot someone to death over something stupid like you thinking you were insulted. The second meaning is that if you confront the open carry sociopaths, they might shoot you because they may misconstrue anything you say to them. Look how even the NRA backed down.

You can't shoot someone to death without a gun. Every human gets angry or depressed at some point. Having a gun gives you a deadly weapon to use as the solution.

      Delete
    3. a open carry dooshbag might shoot someone to death over a insult,but...most likely not. Living a sheltered life such as the one I imagine most anti gun liberals do, means they actually are unable to understand the mentality behind this sot of thing. Being laughed at and told you look stupid with your gun is really quite different from say...being cut off in traffic while legally armed.

I would imagine getting shot over this sort of thing by a gun rights fundamentalist are very low. no one has even looked like they wanted to shoot me i nthe 5 or 6 cases that iv'e called attention to a open carry reject at the east side woodman's here in madison. You might want to look at the plethora of youtube videos of gunfags attempting to enter businesses and being rejected to get some insight into the pathos at work here. These people are very vulnerable to exposer to the expected social norms of civil society via ridicule. in any case, if you really hate open carry and the idiocy of gunfags and really see them as a menace...put your life on the line so that you might save other lives....or shut up.

that being said, when I think of the effectiveness of public ridicule, I remember this from my Army days:Though it's no longer the case in a more extreme and polarized middle east, it used to be that Europeans would attempt change into their swimming suits in the open on public beaches on the med elsewhere, the local (muslim) folks would all point and laugh at the person doing this. Having several hundred people point and laugh at the appeared to have had a 100% cure rate in those cases I witnessed or heard about. think of the times you yourself were shamed out of a aberrant behavior by social pressure. Ever had someone laugh at you and point because you were texting and driving? let me tell you, its much more effective than giving the texter the finger. Ridicule is a powerful social tool when done correctly

  9. I want to know why WI taxpayers are paying big money to have a cop sit in Walker's driveway everyday. With conceal carry laws that Walker signed into law, the boy wonder and his wife can get permits and carry guns. Lot cheaper than sticking it to taxpayers for police protection. Why should Walker get special treatment? He said he is unintimidated so he needs to man up, get a gun and save taxpayers money.
