I could write a huge, long essay about why teachers should be receiving a helluva lot more respect than they are in Fitzwalkerstan. But I won't. You're welcome.
Not to nitpick, but actually, we do pay over 10 thousand per student. And the thirteen cents, lets just tie that to the student instead of the school district. Like school choice. But then that offer to have it back is quickly receded. Hey Capper, poorly taught kids equals poorly taught parents. If the dems would have fixed this years ago we wouldn't have to worry about it now. Right?
Show me the teacher that is being paid $10,000 per kid.
And considering that we used to lead the nation in ACT scores and in graduations, I don't know that it was all that broke. Now, right to work for less states all come in at the bottom of the pile. But don't worry! Walker will have us there soon enough!
So your telling me that the only people who can fix the problems are dems! At least we agree on something.
We pay so much per student, because in America our Health care costs are out of control. Which is unlike every other country in the world and which is also NOT the teachers fault. Take health care cost out of it and we are very far down in terms of per student spending. But hey Dollar bill mcguire needs to make his billions!
@ Imustberacist - Do you mean to tell me that you personally are paying more than $10,000 in school taxes annually? I think the point of the cartoon is that the cost, when averaged out over all taxpayers, is really low. And don't forget that the $10,000 figure is also an average. Many special needs students are very expensive to educate when you factor in the specialized care, transportation, etc.
The point is that you have to take, say, $10,000 and then take out most of it, as most of it does not go to teachers' salaries. Take out the portion that goes to facilities, repairs, upkeep, utilities -- heat, a/c (if they're lucky), water, light, electricity for computer -- and equipment from the computers to books and more, and even from what's left for salaries, also take out the librarian -- plus the principal, vice-principal, guidance office staff, school social worker, custodial staff, etc., etc.
Then, from the little that is left, divide it by all of the teachers for a child -- which may be half a dozen teachers at the middle and high school levels but also can be three or four teachers even at the elementary level, with the grade teacher and the art teacher, the music teacher, the DARE teacher, etc.
From this discussion, I can only conclude that we need to put priority on hiring math teachers, reading comprehension teachers, and especially logic teachers.
imustbe I did not think I would ever agree with you but I do agree with you that the dems would fix it if people like you got out of the way. You want to fix education you better start doing something about poverty! Every country that has lower poverty rates out tests the U.S. and every educational study you read tells you that the best way to predict educational success is by a persons zip code.
tax and spend right? If the system is so broken why didn't mayor Barrett come in and save it like he campaigned on? What makes you think he would do any better as governor. I don't have to defend Walker here because in reality there isn't another viable choice. Poverty doesn't change the chances for education, broken families do. Social programs only enable and encourage poor communities not to maintain the family structure. The more money you throw at it the worse it will get.
Actually, poverty and money problems cause most relationships to end. You're blaming the symptoms for the root illness. No wonder so many of your comments are backasswards.
Really? Rich people never divorce? I see commitment ceremonies these days so the mom and kids don't lose their state benefits of healthcare and grocery money due to marriage. I see people lying about who lives in their home so they don't lose their rent assistance. These programs may have been intended to help but they end up only enabling. I live next to apartments. All the kids my son plays with live with only mom. Dads show up maybe, on the weekend. Tell me this isn't the problem in the schools now? Tell me how we will fix this with more money?
imustbe I didn't say anything about tax and spend and I did not say anything about social programs. Giving money to corporations and rich people is not helping the poor get out of poverty. Not having access to good jobs or the transportation to get to good jobs or a job is not helping people get out of poverty. You should defend Gov. Stupid becasue he's attacking an education system that's not broken for political gain and becasue he has Scooter Jensen waiting in the wings to privitize education. I was really surprised you didn't break out the keeping the best and brightest quote he uses because that's not working as we see our teachers leaving the state. It continues to amaze me how people think Gov. Stupid does anything for them. ps Thanks for the $ 87 mil. dollar tax bill.
Social programs enable poverty. They keep people dependent. Rich people and corporations provide those good jobs you talk about. I'm sorry, but its true.
So where are those good jobs that rich people and corporations provide? They have all the tax breaks they could want and then some, so where are those jobs? Again, your talking points don't hold up to reality.
Look around you, If you would step out from behind that computer you would see. I see cranes all over again. I helped build the new river club in Mequon. The Sendiks family has built grocery stores all over the suburban area. New office buildings going up, a new HHgreg and tile shop in my village. All corporations and rich people.
A few construction projects stemming from tax breaks and gifts from the state. And from whence did the state get that money? From laying off tens of thousands of workers, raising taxes, jacking up fees even higher.
But when I go out, I see a lot of empty stores, vacant restaurants, car dealerships that have been out of business so long that the weeds are splitting the asphalt, turning it into a field more than a parking lot. I see a lot of people that can't make ends meet, are losing their homes, taking second, third and even fourth jobs to try to stay afloat.
But you're correct, the corporations and the rich people are still getting wealthier.
"A few construction projects stemming from tax breaks and gifts from the state." Thats pretty funny, so the only way we can have growth is if its funded by the state? Or maybe better yet the state lets go of its taxing grip on commerce long enough to let a few businesses start? Its true, most of us need to work harder to achieve what is given to some. But the truth is, this us still the country with the most opportunity to advance yourself. Unless, of course, you choose to sit back and assume the country/state/city owes you just for being alive.
Or maybe better yet the state lets go of its taxing grip on commerce long enough to let a few businesses start?
Oh, like the Bush tax cuts? How's that been working? Oh, yeah, not so well. And no one is saying that anyone is expecting a living for doing nothing. That is just another right wing straw man.
No, Im talking about the type of tax incentives mayor Barret uses to try to lure corporations to Milwaulkee.
Well it looks like I'm not the only fan of Bush's tax cuts. At least for incomes under 250,000. It must bring you comfort to know that the extra taxes collected on income earners over $250,000 is expected to be enough to satisfy the current spending levels for about 8.5 days per year. But the downside is doubling the capital gains for everybody. Thats gonna ramp up investment in our economy. Actually I am glad, your president is self destructing by running to the left instead of the center that got him there. Same mistake Kathleen Falk made. In my opinion of course. I'm looking forward to your post on how raising tax rates will help the economy.
Whatever Reagan did it worked. You forget the year before he drastically cut taxes like from 70 percent to 28 percent at the top rate. If you want to make comparisons it seems we are stuck with Jimmy Carter right now.
1. doubling the cap gains taxes WOULD absolutely ramp up investment in America. Poeple would have to keep it in their companies instead of running it to the Caymans!
2. where exactly is he "running to the left", just because you want to stop the bush give away to the top 2% thats middle ground ..... How well have the bush tax cuts worked anyway?
imustbe You get better by the day. The Bush tax cuts are a fail! The tax hike in Illinois sure hasn't hurt them as they kick our tail in new jobs and money being invested in startups. You would think by your logic we would have companies from Illinois flooding to WI but that sure is not happening. I traveled to Illinois this weekend to see family and it was amazing to see the construction taking place down in Illinois for the high speed rail. Sure would be nice if we had 4,000 more construction workers working on high speed rail and moving us into the next century instead of going backwards all for idiolgy because the right has a fear of public transportation. Your statement about hhgreg is the perfect example of how you completely miss the point. hhgreg can build whatever it wants or take over the 76th st location but if customers don't have any money they fail. Your statemnet about the state funding projects is a classic also because that's exactly what Scooter's telling us that corp. and rich people need tax breaks or gifts from the state do do anything it absured, it isn't working, we continue to lose jobs. Pre act 10 2/3 of the companies in WI paid no taxes and act 10 let's more of them off the hook. Why you and by you I mean all of the people on the right allow people to pay no taxes or let rich people pay 7-15% tax rates in WI is amazing to me? Speaking of jobs I thought we created 23,000 jobs last year? Maybe it's 19,500 and the vast majority of those jobs created came under the last budget and Sccoter's budget lost us 23,000 jobs so is Scooter that stupid that he can't add or was that a bold face lie or both. Last June it was all over Natl. TV that he created 18,000 jobs half the jobs created in the U.S. oh but wait really we lost 9,000 jobs. Is Scooter that stupid that he can't add or was that a bold face lie or both. Ps Have you started to encourage people to start buying health insurance yet or are you still content on letting the rest of us pay the bill for them and continue to practice the American version of socialized medicine?
IMBR - why do the righties keep coming up with the false choice of the Illinois way or the WI way?
If you hold IL as the standard bearer of democratic policies, why dont we hold up mississippi, texas or alabama or even florida as the standard bearer for republican policies?

So will the teachers go into the health care exchanges that Obama has set up to reduce education costs?
DeleteProbably. It will save a bundle for the teachers and the taxpayers. But you wouldn't like that, judging by previous comments you've left.
