What Did Liberals Do That Was So Offensive To The Republican Party?

  2. Where do I even start here?

First of all, this is a quote from a TV show script.

Second, Liberals did not get African Americans the right to vote, Republicans did. The 15th amendment was proposed by a Republican held congress under a Republican President, Grant. The vote for the amendment in congress went totally along party lines passing 144 - 44 with 35 abstaining.
NO Democrats supported the 15th amendment, while only 3 Republicans voted against it. A number of staunch supporters of equal rights, one being Massachusetts Senator Charles Sumner (a Republican), abstained from voting because they felt the amendment didn’t do enough to stop southern states from restricting African-American voting.

Third, Woodrow Wilson (a democrat) was strongly opposed to the women’s Suffrage Amendment at first, but was finally convinced to support it. The Chairman of the Suffrage Committee, James R. Mann an Illinois Republican proposed the House resolution to approve the Susan Anthony Amendment that granted women the right to vote. The measure passed in the House 304-89, a 42 votes above the required two-thirds majority. Republicans voted in favor of the bill 200 - 19 with 11 not voting, while Democrats voted in favor 102 - 69 with 12 not voting with a large percentage opposing the bill.
In this case yes, they helped to pass it, but by no means did they solely “get” women the right to vote.

As for the Civil Rights Act HR 7152: It’s true Hubert Humphrey, a Democrat was responsible for helping to get it passed. But when the House vote came down on February 10, 1964, Congress passed HR 7152 by a majority of 290 - 130. Republicans voted in favor 138 - 34. That’s 75% in favor Democrats voted in favor 152 - 96. That’s 63% in favor
The senate then voted to take up the bill by a majority of 67 - 17 Republicans voted in favor 26 - 1 That’s 96% in favor Democrats voted in favor 41 - 16 That’s only 61% in favor

Now tell me again, who supported civil rights more, liberals or conservatives.

Here is a quote from congresslink.org regarding the passage of the Civil Rights Act: “The Republican Party was not so badly split as the Democrats by the civil rights issue. As it turned out, only one Republican senator would participate in the filibuster against the bill. In fact, since 1933, Republicans had a more positive record on civil rights in Congress than the Democrats. In the twenty-six major civil rights votes since 1933, a majority of Democrats opposed civil rights legislation in over 80 percent of the votes. By contrast, the Republican majority favored civil rights in over 96 percent of the votes.”

Personally, I’m a Libertarian, so I could happily do without both parties, but let us PLEASE get our facts straight.

Shame on you Lawrence O'Donnell, Jr.

    1. This went right over your head, did it not? It said liberal. Not Democrat. Not Republican. Get a clue.

    2. The poster obviously is inferring that liberals are democrats, in that the flyer is for anti-republicans. and yes it was the radical republicans that pushed for black rights the hardest. but as the tables have turned, republicans from that time would now be considered democrats and vice versa. however the party lines have been skewed so much that to call yourself a republican or democrat is practically useless. as is the electoral college and 2 party system.

  3. The previous reply is equating liberal with democrat, and conservative with republican. One must remember that the republican party of today is very different from that of Lincoln, and also very different from that of pre-Civil Rights Act. The South shifted from democrat to republican after the passage of this act, and changed the two parties forever. It was liberals of both parties who pushed ahead and made these changes, not the conservatives. Discussing republicans and democrats since the Civil War era as if they are the same today is inaccurate.

  4. It doesn't say Republicans or Democrats. It says liberals. Read much?

  5. Wow. That is one of the longer screeds I've ever read that missed the point by such a wide margin. By the vary nature of their efforts, the people who did these things were liberals by the standards of the times during which these things were done.

  7. Anon from 4/5, yes, by today's standard. And none of the Republicans of the past were Republicans by today's standards. Get it now? Are you sure you even made it to Junior High?
