Solidarity Fish Fry, Week 19: A New Challenge

Friday is Week 19 for the Solidarity Fish Fry.

In the past 18 weeks, we have seen a number of challenges.  We have dealt with the ogrish manager, Tom Miller.  We have had management lie to us that the union workers were not there or had been sent home. We have had hosts try to seat us at non-union tables. We have had Randy Bryce's atrocious dinner manners and tartar sauce addiction.

Yes, we have shared in the struggles.  And we have overcome each and every time.

Now we have a new challenge this week.

It's the first week of Lent.

That means that there will be a lot more people there than there is any other time of the year, outside of Good Friday itself.

With more people, and only one or two union servers, that means that the wait times could be considerably longer.  Be prepared to wait. And wait.  And wait some more.

If you can not wait that long for a union server, simply go somewhere else to eat. And make sure you let management know why you are leaving.  Say it loudly and clearly enough so others can hear you.  If they see customers walking out the door and taking others with them, they just might see that they are much better off with more union staff members.

What you should not do is capitulate and go to a non-union table.  That is defeating the purpose of our efforts.

If you feel yourself weakening, remember what the union members have gone through and are going through.  Waiting for a few minutes is nothing in comparison and it is the least we can do.

To help pass the time, you can watch and see how long Randy keeps his vow to give up tartar sauce for lent.  I give him three minutes before he's bogarting the big bowl of tartar at the end of the buffet table.
